Boney Kapoor can’t see what the National Awards ‘fuss is all about’

Boney Kapoor, who along with his daughters Janhvi and Khushi, accepted the late Sridevi’s National Award on Thursday, said that he can’t see what the controversy was all about.

Boney Kapoor along with his daughters, Janhvi and Khushi, accepted the posthumous National Award for the late Sridevi on Thursday, in a controversial ceremony marked by boycotts and no-shows. After the sudden announcement by the office of the President of India, several recipients of the prestigious awards refused to attend the ceremony. A majority of the awards were given out by Information and Broadcasting minister, Smriti Irani, a deviation from the tradition.

On Thursday, President Ram Nath Kovind’s office announced that he only commits one hour for awards shows, and would not be available to present every winner. It was reported that 68 awardees did not attend the ceremony. Boney Kapoor, the husband of the cinema icon Sridevi, was one of the 11 awardees to be presented with their award by the president. “I would have been equally happy if the Minister of Information and Broadcasting had given me the award. It is ultimately the recognition of your work. I don’t understand what the fuss is about. There is no harm in receiving the award by the concerned ministry, “ the film producer told ANI.

Sridevi died suddenly in February during a visit to Dubai for a family wedding. Her eldest daughter, Janhvi – who will soon be making her film debut – wore her mother’s saree to the event. Said Boney Kapoor about the honor, considered the highest in the field of cinema in the country, “I am extremely happy and proud. This is what she’s got after working for 50 years in the industry; she would have cherished this award all her life. This is the highest honor. We miss her and today we miss her even more. I would have preferred, she going and accepting the award and me and my children sitting down and clapping for her.”

Sridevi won her award for her performance in Mom. In the movie, directed by Ravi Udyawar, she played a mother who sets out to avenge her stepdaughter’s death. Pakistani actor Sajal Ali played her step-daughter in the film. Sridevi will be seen in a cameo appearance in Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero later this year.
