HipHopHead’s DaTownCrier sat down with this hot upcoming act in the Music industry who’s trying to make his brand know across the Black Continent and beyond.
And the interview goes thus:
DATOWNCRIER: So tell us a little detail about yourself and why you do music?
YUNG SULI: My name is Giwa sulaimon Toyosi, stage name Yung sulli, am Nigerian, from Lagos State, and am the Second-born in my Family.
Music has always been the most important thing in my life, growing up without a father, I was missing the element of a father figure in my life. Since I was a kid I have found escape in music and to me it is a great way to create my own reality.
DATOWNCRIER: Okay…. That’s nice, so Which style of Music do you do?
YUNG SULI: I am a Rapper and a singer-songwriter. I rap and Sing in English, Yoruba & in Pidgin
My style of music language as goes with good music cause it has vibes you can feel it and so their for am looking forward to promote my Yoruba style. I don’t need to rap in English to show that yeah I know and understand hip-hop or trap music
DATOWNCRIER: Good, now what pushed you into Music?
YUNG SULI: In high school me and my friend used to blunt cruise and freestyle for fun. From then on I started making Hip Hop, trap, Afro music for different reasons then also I make other types of music. But, I love listening to music.
DATOWNCRIER: That shows hunger bro, now which artist inspired you to do music?
YUNG SULI: First of all I’ll say Reminisce who is also known as Alaga BABA hafusa ….. Back than he as being a studio rat before, Jay Z, Bryson Tiller, Dagrin, 50Cent, Kendrick Lamar, Dido then of course Fela king of Afro
DATOWNCRIER: What do you expect your music to do in the next few years from now?
YUNG SULI: I will like to get my self into that international market through my music in a few years to come plus probably partner or sign under one of top record labels like SONY MUSIC , UNIVERSAL, WARNER MUSIC, ISLAND MUSIC, RED HILL RECORD, DEF JAM.
DATOWNCRIER: How can hip hop in Nigeria grow?
YUNG SULI: First to grow up you need to be a community. Movement matter a lot
Chocolate city as been one of the major labels for Hip Hop here in Nigeria. Last year they organized a show for all the rappers to showcase them selves “the Coronation”. Also lots of people turned up and it was amazing.
DATOWNCRIER: Yeah, it was the bomb. What ways do you think your music can go in adding value to our hip hop industry in Nigeria?
YUNG SULI: As I said earlier since I was a kid I found escape in music . A lot of youth like me out there are going through this but do know how or who to share their feelings with. Am not the best because if you are to choose, there are a lot out there. I am just different and that makes me special.
DATOWNCRIER: I can see you can wait to start making a name for yourself, but do you have something else to add for your fans and the public??
YUNG SULI: Well, Apart from music I also have passion for fashion and drawing. Also a Shout out to Olumba Lo shey beat he’s my producer and he has always been my mentor.
