“What we learn becomes a part of who we are.”

It has been awhile since our last escapade. This time, Team Unlideals and DLinkers took a local trip with a purpose to Guimbal, Iloilo.

Located about an hour and a half away from the city, is Sipitan-Badiang Elementary School and last February 17, 2017, with the help of teacher-in-charge, Cyril Gasacao, a partnership and feeding program was established.

Aside from the local government units and government funded activities, “Project Grow” is the first private outreach group to partner with their community. Making a difference in the lives of those who need our help the most comes in the form of community involvement. This is also a way to give back and share our blessings.

With a goal of establishing a corporate social responsibility that helps to the improvement of the community, Unlideals and Dlinkers wanted to prove that our capacity goes beyond the four walls of the office. We scouted and chose among district schools that needed the most intervention, with conditions being they be located within Iloilo and won’t pose any hazards or dangers.

The main purpose of our visit was to conduct a feeding and hygiene kit giving to 70 students ranging from kindergarten to third grade. The hygiene kit included a dental set (tooth brush, toothpaste), small towel, soap. We also included some balloons.

Games to energize the kids included “Give Me What I Want”, singing, sharing and showcasing of talents.

“Poppy: Happiness isn’t something you put inside, it’s already there. Sometimes you just need someone to help you find it.”

While they ate, our original plan was to show them the latest Disney Movie, Moana, but it just so happened that a majority of them have already seen it. Instead, we decided to go with the back-up movies. It was either Storks or Trolls; DLinkers and Unlideals teams chose and favored the latter.

The feel-good musical plot basically revolves around a group of Trolls and evil Bergens, a group of sad monsters who believe happiness could be acquired by eating trolls.

When the movie reached its end, to our surprise, all the kids started singing along to Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” – the song the movie is most known for. Their rendition of “True Colors” also brought a sense of nostalgia to the grown-ups (yes, we too enjoyed watching the movie).

To prove how effective, enjoyable and inspirational the film was to the kids, Unlideals initiated movie trivia session. Each child who volunteered got a chance to express and share what lesson they learned from movie. The biggest moral of the story being that happiness can be found and created from within.

In short, Trolls taught us that sometimes, being content with what we already have is all we need to find contentment and genuine happiness.

Mr. Gasacao believes in the in the principle that it takes a whole village to raise a child. Learning goes beyond classroom and should include not only parents, but the community as well.
