Leica Q2 Monochrom Camera has a discreet black and neutral grey body to match the monochrome images it captures and is wrapped in classic grainy leather. Leica removed Leica’s iconic “red dot” badge and the script engraved on top of the camera. The inscriptions on the lens and shutter speed dial are all gray and white on black, and the camera name is engraved around the warm shoe.
The ergonomics and design of the buttons are identical to those of the Leica Q2. At the top of the camera you will find the power switch and shutter button, a shutter speed dial to select the full stop shutter speeds, and a control dial to select the shutter speeds of the third stop. On the back of the camera you will find a four-way controller, a fixed 3″ touch screen and the Play, Menu and Function buttons.At the bottom of the camera you will find a single slot for SD cards and a battery port. The Q2 Monochrom uses the BP-SCL4 battery on the Leica SL and has a CIPA rating of 350 rounds per charge. In use, you can expect a lot more shots than that, although a lot of wi-fi playback and usage is a great battery consumption. In our experience (which includes turning off the camera between shots), we found that the battery would easily last a couple of days of moderate shooting.
The Leica Q2 Monochrom’s 28 mm F1.7 fixed lens has 11 elements, including three aspheric, which is a fairly complex optical formula. The lens can be clicked in macro mode to take close-up photos up to 17 cm (6.7in). The updated 3.68M dot OLED is incredibly bright and provides accurate live viewing of black and white images without having to remove the camera from the eye. However, there isn’t much in the way of an eyepiece in monochrome Q2, so eyewear users might have a bit of a problem with it.Leica Q2 Monochrom is Leica’s latest dedicated black and white camera, joining the M Monochrom and M10 Monochrom hand-focus telemeters. The Q2 Monochrom has a 47MP sensor that produces only black and white images, a 28mm F1.7 fixed ASPH lens with 17cm (6.7 inch) macro mode and a demand for better dynamic gamma and noise performance compared to Q2 colour. The Q2 Monochrom will certainly not be for everyone, but for dedicated black and white shooters there is a lot to love about this camera.

The fall weather in London is known to be unpredictable, and it was reassuring to know that Q2 could withstand some moisture when the skies inevitably opened.
