LAZIO defender Stefan de Vrij has told club chiefs he want to work with Lionel Messi at Barcelona.
The Catalans are in the market for a new centre-back.
Samuel Umtiti is currently crocked, Javier Mascherano is widely expected to leave the club and Thomas Vermaelen has been plagued by injuries.
De Vrij, 25, has spent this last three years of his career in Rome.
However, according to Spanish news outlet Don Balon, he’s now angling for a move.
It’s suggested he’s desperate to link up with Messi at the Nou Camp and is refusing to sign a new contract.
Lazio are ready to make life difficult though.
Don Balon say he’ll be allowed to leave – but only if he signs a new contract first.
The Serie A heavyweights are strapped for cash and Barca will need to pay more for De Vrij if he’s recently penned fresh terms.
De Vrij isn’t the only Dutch ace Barca are keeping tabs on.
Reports earlier this week claimed Ernesto Valverde is also eyeing Manchester United defender Daley Blind.
The versatile Star
has been an important squad member since signing from Ajax in 2014.
However, his Red Devils contract expires at the end of the season and talks regarding an extension are yet to take place.
Valverde views the versatile star as an ideal long-term replacement for Mascherano.
