Ignored Sidekicks Or Hero Ka Dost of Bollywood Movies, The ‘Circuits’ & ‘Sambhas’ To Get Their Due In This Film, Finally

Can you imagine Batman without Robin? Gabbar without Sambha? Or Munna without Circuit? No. All these characters and heroes have had a screen presence that has moved people and resonated with them for years on end.

However, imagining them without their ‘sidekicks’ is tough and definitely peculiar.

They are what give these core heroes half their character and identity. Most often than not, the screen space is usurped by the central hero with his quirks, dialogues and on-screen aura. The characters that support them are sidelined. This cinematic marginalization happens even when the supporting character has done a much better job than the hero himself.

Indian cinema has witnessed some brilliant performances by actors who never acquired individual central roles in movies. Actors like Sanjay Mishra, Deepak Dobriyal, Vikrant Massey, Adil Hussain and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub among others have played some exceptional roles that stood out, however, were never able to garner as much limelight as the actual protagonists.

Newbie Hardik Mehta, has attempted to highlight this very idea in his movie called Kaamyaab. The movie is an attempt to centralize the character in a supporting role to the main hero.

Who is Hardik Mehta?

Mehta has assisted a number of Film makers in their endeavours to achieve success. He’s been a part of films like Lootera and Trapped and has won the National Award for a Non-Feature Film called ‘Amdavad Ma Famous’.

He has always been a movie junkie and has a flair for storytelling. He looked at iconic movie dialogues and observed that they were spoken not by the hero, but by the actor on the side and realized that he needs to make a film about all those characters who were overshadowed by the hero.

He said “Not many would know that the iconic dialogue ‘Hum jahan khade hote hain, line wahi se shuru hoti hai’ was not spoken by Amitabh Bachchan but was spoken by Bob Christo and was later said by Amitabh Bachchan again, which made it iconic.”

This is how the idea of Kaamyaab came to him.

The idea behind Kaamyaab

The film starring Sanjay Mishra and Deepak Dobriyal was premiered at the 23rd Busan Film Festival on the 5th of October 2018. The movie is about the character of an actor who wants to play his 500th role in a bid to be remembered forever.

“For Hardik, the film is about paying a tribute to the super talented yet mostly ignored ‘side heroes’ of Bollywood- character actors who make the hero look good”, said a source.

He aims to bring to light the characters from the genre of the Asranis, the Johnny Levers and the Sanjay Mishras. The very reason that he chose Sanjay Mishra and Deepak Dobriyal is that they too have been brilliant character actors who have helped make the hero look good, without getting their due.

This attempt by Mehta will certainly not go in vain as these character actors and some of the dialogues spoken by them still resonate with the audiences at a mass level. His take on the idea is innovative and is much awaited!
