(CHAPTER 19)

HIS his special and remarkable character trait of Jesus is more than just being brave, courageous, or strong. It is to lay down your life, like the crusaders and knights of old, in the interest of the weak and defenseless.

Chivalry: politeness, courtesy, bravery, gallant, courageous, boldness.

This divine attribute is beautifully summed up in Revelation: “Who is worthy to open the seals? the lion and the lamb.” (Rev. 5: 3).

He is a freedom fighter, but He does not fight with swords and sticks. He fights with silent resistance against the exploitation by the religious leaders:

  • “Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the mastery of it. ”

  • William Penn: “Right is right, even if everyone is against it, and wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it.”

  • Oh, do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for powers equal to your tasks.

Unique Features:

This bravery is not a purposeless noise, but calculated (intentional) focus and accuracy.

This bravery is not a charismatic personality type, but a cautious dependence (meekness) on the Father.

“Behold, I send you out as wolves among the wolves. Be ye therefore sharp as the serpent, but as sincere as the dove.” (Matt. 10:16).

This bravery can not compromise, but stands fearless at the truth.

This bravery is not a secret search for recognition and prestige, but is a sincere search to see the defenseless and weak rise.

This bravery is not just a periodic heroic deed, but a daily life of obedience and faith in God alone.

And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.”           (1 Sam. 17:45-47).

Brave Chivalry in the NT

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus… ” (Acts 4:13-20).

“And see, now I go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me. But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” (Acts 20:22-24).

“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness…” (Eph. 6:14).

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”    (1 Cor. 15:58).

Faith makes you brave and fearless:

Through the Bible, people received faith to do supernaturally brave things (Heb. 11): Abel; Enoch; Noah; Abraham; Isaac; Joseph and Moses.

“And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets: who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again. Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection. Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented—of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise” (Heb. 11:32-39).

Chivalry in Daily Agreements and Contracts:

Our lives are made up of thousands of transactions, negotiations, agreements and commitments. These transactions are considered sacred from a biblical perspective. Life is a collection of contracts. Relationship implies a commitment, a contract, a loyalty to each other. Spiritual authority implies that we understand the order of life and act with divine wisdom and do what is right.

“Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.” (Matt. 18:19).

The Bible is in fact God’s contract of love with man: Jesus repaired and fulfilled man’s breach of contract by giving His life as a sacrifice and payment for our punishment.

1. The Law – Civil Law: Ex. 21:18 – 23: 9.

2. Covenant – The word occurs 272 times in the Bible.

3. Oath – The word occurs 255 times in the Bible.

When one studies the laws in the OT, there is a clear dividing line between intentional and unintentional misconduct. It determined the extent to which a person was liable and what the refund would be.

The Bible gives several examples of contracting: Gen. 23: 3-16 After her death, Abraham legally bought Sarah a tomb from the Hittites.

Gen. 25: 29-34 Jacob buys Esau’s birthright.

Gen. 29: 19-30 Jacob’s transaction for Rachel with Laban, and the deception with Leah.

When a society cheapens the power of an agreement, that society degenerates into self-destructive anarchy.

Faith is a form of contract. Peter asks, “Lord, can I walk on the water too?” Jesus agrees and answers: “Come!” Peter responds to the invitation and breaks the law of displacement. He can only walk on water because an agreement has been made with Heaven that has come near.

Business is the creation and maintenance of agreements, barter transactions and commitments. To keep your word and stay loyal to an agreement are the paths by which all kinds of goods are exchanged. By breaking our agreements, weighing with false scales and simply breaking these transactions, we are destroying the access paths of our own provision.

In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, He prescribes various contracts and commitments:

He did not come to invalidate the law, but to give it a deeper meaning (Matt. 5:17).

Reconcile a lawsuit by settling (Matt. 5: 25-26).

Divorce – stay true to your marriage contract (Matt. 5: 31-32).

Lust and adultery can be seen as taking the marriage treasure of nudity and sexual intimacy without paying for it legally (Matt. 5: 27-30).

Taking an oath (Matt. 5: 33-37). Let your yes simply be yes. Keep your word. The honor of your word is the consistency to which provision flows (Jas. 5:12).

Legality, mandate, is essential to success in life. Jesus could not start trading with what heaven offers until it was given to Him. (The Wedding at Cana, John 2).

You cannot raise money on behalf of any organization without a legal mandate. You cannot speak on behalf of any group without their consent.

We are currently experiencing so much chaos in our society because people are trying to make a living from assumptions, assumptions, unconfirmed expectations and hearsay. Jesus can cast out demons because He is the legal authority of God. Jesus is the heavenly Law enforcer of God the Father, the King.

A large part of relationship problems are due to an illegal base and foundation. Who hired you? Who gave you the right? Therefore, when we want to correct someone, we should ask permission, except where the law already exists or has been granted. As with a parent-child relationship, an employee-employer relationship, etc.

Many problems arise because we move illegally outside the framework of order and authority. In heaven there is order: “They reject the authority of the Lord and insult the heavenly beings. Not even the archangel Michael did such a thing. When he argued with the devil about the body of Moses, he did not allow himself to insult and condemn the devil, but he said to him, “The Lord will punish you.” But these people speak blasphemously about things of which they have no knowledge.” (Jude 8-10).

Some use the fact that we received life from righteousness in Christ Jesus to be premature. Paul does not use his right to an income: (1 Cor. 9:12): “You are free, but do not use your freedom as a cover to do evil. Use it to serve God. You must respect all people and love your fellow believers. Fear God. Honor the emperor.” (1 Pet. 2: 16-17).

Recognize and respect authority in meetings. Give recognition to the chairperson and ask permission before making a point. Follow good order: “Mr. Chairman. . . ” Stay at the point and ask permission to move outside the point.

Abuse:

Some people abuse a given original commitment by moving the goalposts all the time, without updating the contract. Regularly reaffirm and review the contract.

Duplicate standards:

Use the right weights and measuring bowls so that you can enjoy a long life in the land that the LORD your God gives you. People who cheat with dishonest weights and measuring bowls are contemptible to the LORD your God (Deut. 25: 15-16). “Wicked place, shall I bear the wrong line, or the false content that I so hate? Should I acquit the owner of an unreliable scale, one with a bag full of false weights? ” (Micah 6: 10-11).

Peer pressure:

Do not go after the majority and also do wrong. When testifying in a court case, do not run after the majority and distort the truth. You must not pervert your testimony for the sake of someone just because he or she is poor (Ex. 23: 2-3).

Deception:

You must not pervert the law in a court of law just because someone is poor (Ex. 23: 6).
