Still can’t open that jar of pickles?

It’s okay, women’s advancements in technology have far surpassed simple household hang up’s. Unfortunately, the numbers show Women continue to be undervalued in the workforce. On average there are 51% in the workforce. While that may sound impressive,  approximately 24% of women compared to the 76% of men in the male-dominated field of tech.

When referring to the tech space, assumptions are software engineers, developers, and coding geniuses. Although many of these paths are fundamental to the tech world, this expands to eCommerce specialist, digital marketers, and behavioral scientist. The field of tech has grown far past building a site or creating the latest app.

Yes, we have talented leaders in this space such as Ginni Rometty the CEO of IBM and Susan Wojcicki the CEO of YouTube who continue to inspire the generations following;  but are leaders such as these enough? The rate of women in the tech space who quit are much higher than their male counterparts. Many factors may contribute to this, such as unmatched pay for the same work and social pressures to perform (outperform) as the men. Women offer diversity and a new perspective which in turn generates revenue. With women consisting of more than 50% of the population, women also dominate consumer spending. Making women more of a valuable asset to any business.

Movement in the Right Direction

“It used to be the norm to be in the minority when it came to men and women in high-tech. But the recent explosion of eCommerce and multichannel commerce has presented an opportunity for leveling the field. Many new service sectors, technologies, and more have cropped up to serve this new way of doing retail — and especially true for eCommerce merchants. These new businesses have a fresh way of looking at the problems merchants face during growth, and their internal cultures often match, and I’m thrilled to see more and more women joining these technically-forward and often disruptive and groundbreaking companies.”

Although we a far from balancing out the scales in the tech space there have been many strides to promote STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)  for future tech leaders. The world of tech for Young Women is no longer “ for boys”, with the new sparked interest for many young women, optimistically gender equality will soon follow suit.
