Pantone has declared Ultra Violet to be the color for 2018.
The Pantone site declares “PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet Conveying originality and ingenuity, the magical Ultra Violet is a distinctive and complex purple shade that fascinates and intrigues.”. Pantone assures us that “Conveying originality and ingenuity, the magical Ultra Violet is a distinctive and complex purple shade that fascinates and intrigues.”
Often, I do not like the color they pick, not even a little bit. This is one reason why freedom of choice is a good thing.
This year I do like the chosen color. I like it very much. Purple is one of the two colors I like and wear with any frequency, the other being black. This year, I’ll be fashionable, and right on trend.
There is a variety of purple stones to choose from, among them amethyst, sugilite, charoite, and tanzanite. Amethyst is my usual go-to.
Pantone’s “declaration” on Ultra Violet sounds kind of woo-woo, as proclamations by “authorities” often do: “The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.” – Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.” Yes, yes, I say, grasping a handful of strands of deeply purple beads, holding them to my heart.
Excuse me, please. I’m going to go make a purple necklace right away.
