Australian Coastal Home Reveals Dynamic Façade

This Coastal home in Australia was envisioned by Coy Yiontis Architects for an older couple with a soft spot for traveling. A friendly getaway for visiting grandchildren and friends, the residence was planned as a haven between adventures. Its layout offers both social and private living spaces, as well as an optimum connection with the outdoors.

“Screening from western neighbors and the need for the home to sit at a single level across a sloping site dictated the form of the building,” the architects said. “Building form was driven by site conditions and the need for accessibility; the resulting dynamic façade and dramatic internal volumes belie its livability.”

Living spaces are oriented towards the north and cross ventilated. Bedrooms are oriented to the east to capture the morning sun. “Consideration of the clients aging comfortably in place determined that there should be no steps in the home,” the architects added.

“Internal spaces and garden are at one continuous level and the resulting terraced garden at the rear of the sloping site provides ease of maintenance and an abundance of vegetables.” Inside, white walls provide a clean backdrop for the furniture items and decoration.
