Contemporary Penthouse in Valencia Solves Space Challenge

Spatial Designer Josep Ruà transformed an apartment with a challenging layout in Valencia, Spain into a contemporary penthouse with maximum functionality. Described as “a box completely isolated from the outside with two detached terraces,” the apartment was in dire need of a differentiation between the daytime and the nighttime areas. Storage was also a challenge, mainly due to the size of the small apartment — 753-square-feet, including the terraces.

The first step was to cover one of the terraces and convert it into a master bedroom. “The floor was divided into two halves by a curved wall that, together with a large bookcase, helped soften the severity of the space,” the architects added.

The social hub of the contemporary penthouse is the open-plan lounge area, kitchen and dining space. Wood accents paired with a light color palette and lots of natural lighting make the space feel open and airy. Part of the kitchen is hidden behind an automatic door, which solves the problem of storage with no aesthetic compromises. The living area connects seamlessly to a beautiful terrace, providing a sense of continuity between the indoor and outdoor spaces. [Photography by Asier Rua]
