Olson Kundig Architects materialized a splendid Concrete Retreat, beautifully nestled in its site, the home is called ‘The Pierre’ and resides in San Juan Islands, Washington. The design focus was set on the owner`s interest on a stone outcropping, one that was about to change the design process soon.

The home was conceived as a retreat and the name comes from the french word for stone ” Pierre”. The house uses rough bold materials to express itself yet the green roof, surrounding foliage and stones surrounding are offering it a great feel of appurtenance in the site, slowly dissolving the establishment into nature.

The interior and exterior space are animated through fireplace hearths in the stone,  left raw, in balance. The master bathroom adorns water cascades through no less than three polished pools, natural sinks in the stone present.  Carved out of rock in the main space a powder room exists, to insert light in the core a sky-tube using mirrors was used.
