Expanding more on the topic of Visualization, we are excited to announce our upcoming course on how to create conceptual Architectural diagrams. These diagrams will explain a fictional design process in six clear and visually attractive steps.

The diagram has grown in importance in the architectural discourse as a very powerful way to communicate and sell ideas to clients. We will go over the workflow commonly used to setup and create these diagrams. Along the way we will provide some insights on what makes a good diagram and why, but mostly the focus lies on the technical aspects of creating the diagrams.

A render using V-ray with a Toon material applied

We will use Rhino with V-ray to render our base renders and we will go over the optimal settings to produce the best high quality images, either for web or for print. We are using the V-ray plugin as our rendering engine because it simply is one of the best out there. Not only to create photo realistic renders, but also because it has some nifty features to create more cartoonish renders.

Step 2 of the architectural diagram sequence

Our fictional project consists of designing an apartment building on a plot in Mexico City. At the end of the course we will have six diagrams showing the whole design process, from the initial plot to the final base shape of the apartment building. Our first diagram will be a clean diagram just showing our site, explaining the location. The next diagram we will show some important connections that exist in the proximity of our site. In our third diagram we’ll jump inserting our base mass complying with a fictional amount of square meters and in the fourth, fifth and sixth diagram we’ll shape our mass according to various contextual factors.

Step 6 of the architectural diagram sequence

When we have our diagram sequence rendered we’ll use Adobe Illustrator CC to put texts and annotations to finalize the diagrams. As a final touch we will use Adobe Photoshop CC to create a cool animation out of our Architectural Diagram sequence.
