Dynamo 101 – Fundamentals with Konrad K. Sobon

Tags: dynamo

Expanding more on the topic of Parametric Modeling, we’re excited to announce our upcoming course on Dynamo with Konrad K. Sobon! Dynamo is a visual programming extension for Autodesk Revit that allows you to sculpt geometry, explore design options, manipulate data, automate processes, and create links between multiple applications. Its graphical interface makes it easy to get familiar with the concepts of programming and it is intended to extend Building Information Modeling with the data and logic using this graphical algorithm editor.

Dynamo Community

Introducing Konrad K. Sobon
Konrad is a Project BIM Specialist for Grimshaw Architects, New York. He is also a member of Design Technology group at Grimshaw that developed a number of collaboration and design tools for architects. He specializes in Computation Design implementation on BIM projects and is an author of a number of project enhancing applications and workflows. He is the creator of Mantis Shrimp and Bumblebee plug-ins for Dynamo as well as the keeper of www.archi-lab.net – an online resource for technology curious architects.

The Dynamo interface

The main reasons to get familiar with Dynamo is to save time and increase accuracy. Besides doing formal explorations, Dynamo’s strongest aspect is the manipulating, organizing and managing of your building information. To give a quick example, the size of an office dictates how many desks can fit whitin that space. This will define the occupancy load and will determine which door type one might use based on building regulations. Let’s say if your occupancy load is bigger than a certain amount, a special type of door needs to be installed. Doing this manually, would take a long time, be a dull task and also would be prone to human error. By using Dynamo, we can automate this task, which saves you time and unnecessary errors.

The Dynamo interface

This course is an introductory course and will explain the very basics of Dynamo. At the end of this course you will be comfortable navigating the Dynamo world. You’ll be familiar with not just the software, the user interface, library, search menus etc., but you’ll have some good references to go to for questions you may have in the Dynamo community. The course is not only geared towards drilling technical knowledge into you, but also designed to show you the benefits of thinking and solving problems a certain way that might be new to you. Of course the technical know-how is fundamental, but so is acquiring the attitude towards automation and visual programming in our everyday workflows. This course will introduce you to the basics of Dynamo and will show you the benefits these tools can have in the daily practice of architecture, engineering and construction.
