Learn how to design an organic facade using T-splines

Our newest course at Thinkparametric will focus on designing an Organic Facade. It focuses on teaching various methods, techniques and software that will help you when designing more free-form shapes. We’ll walk you trough the process of Modeling an organic building envelope using Rhino, T-splines and Grasshopper to a schematic design level.

Splash_Floorslabs_600We’ll start by modeling the interior geometry in Rhino 3D

We’re going to use the Heydar Aliyev Centre from Zaha Hadid architects as our reference project. This project is a nice example of a building that has a challenging organic envelope and beautiful inner spaces. This course is going to be interesting as it covers various topics, like advanced 3D modeling and parametric modeling. We’ll also take a look at some different software, like Rhino 3D a free-form NURBS modeler, T-splines a subD plugin for Rhino 3D that will let us create the free-form facade more easy and accurate and finally we’ll use Grasshopper for the panelization and to generate the space frame structure.

Splash_SpaceFrame_600We’ll generate a schematic space frame structure using Grasshopper

We’ll start by importing floor plan, section and elevation images as a base to start modeling. We’ll continue to setup some 2D line work and translate those lines into 3D shapes. When we have modeled the main interior elements, we’ll continue to start modeling the interior and exterior skin.

Splash_total3d_600We’ll also use Grasshopper to generate a schematic panel layout for the skin

The focus of this course will lie on modeling the skin, what methods and techniques are useful and what software is appropriate for getting the job done fast, accurate and efficient. We choose to use T-splines instead of for instance Autodesk Maya or Blender as this plugin has the smoothest learning curve. Before we start using the plugin we’ll explain briefly what subD geometries are and why you should care when you decide to design something more organic. When we’ve modeled the exterior skin using T-splines we’ll use Grasshopper to generate the interior skin. Instead of simply offsetting the exterior with a fixed amount, we’re going to embed a little bit of structural intelligence by offsetting the skin more where it structurally makes more sense. We’re also going to use Grasshopper to generate a schematic space frame structure and to generate a schematic panelization of the facade.

This Course will be available on our platform on Monday 10th of August
