Creating Models for Development Analysis with Grasshopper

Architectural design should always start with a proper assessment of the site´s Development potential.
Parametric modeling can assist early on these tasks to by developing systems that allow a designer to sketch models based on site restrictions quickly. From these early models, we can extract important data like the site area, building footprints, site usage, number of levels etc. all of which can be used to evaluate the feasibility of the project and inform later design phases.

On our next course, Jaime Sol will walk you through the whole process of how you can create a Development Analysis with Grasshopper to achieve this. At the end of it, you will have a tool that will allow you to quickly sketch massings based on site restrictions and program requirements. Them you´ll use these massings to extract data and determine all the parameters to perform a complete development analysis.

You´ll start by creating a bounding volume based on site restrictions which represent the maximum space you can utilize on your project. Then you´ll learn how to perform quick modifications to this volume creating voids or using shapes to guide your schematic design further.

After that, you´ll determine your levels based on the desired program and area constraints. Then you´ll sketch your program floor plans in 2D specifying the saleable and non-saleable area and then position them in your 3d massing.

Using these geometries, you´ll extract all the different information that constitutes a development analysis. And you´ll learn how to export these data from your Grasshopper definition to an Excel Spreadsheets for its presentation.

At the end, you´ll have a streamlined tool that will allow you create and explore all the different possibilities a site can offer and immediately evaluate its development potential.
