eBoutique Source: Perry Clark Home

Los Angeles Design Blog | Material Girls | LA Interior Design - Published by Jill-LA

I was recently introduced to the eBoutique: Perry Clark Home, an online source for unique finds and goods relating to decorative accessories, art, textiles, tableware, furnishings, & more. It's an artisan influenced of well curated selections.

Some of my favorite Fall finds and gift giving items are their lush textiles and throws in neutral earthy tones.

I am loving these Kashwere Houndstooth Luxury Throws. They come in black / cream, slate gray / white, & malt / cream.

A worldly collection of art featuring architecture and street scenes are available.

Some of the unique tableware items on the site are these:

I like the rustic and modern look of these pepper and salt mill set. They are made from brushed stainless steel and acacia wood.

These "dash" and "pinch" salt and pepper cellars are cute too.

On the whimsical side these bicycle plates designed by Artisan Rae Dunn are available in four distinctively designed bikes.

The rustic theme flows into the furnishings category. This Farmhouse Dining Table is custom made by Sovie Woodworking exclusively for Perry Clark Home. It's handcrafted of old growth pine reclaimed from a turn of the century barn in Northwest Ohio.

Last but not least, pretty scented candles always make great gifts!

Fall, Fun, and Food Trucks!

Chicago Design Blog | Material Girls | Chicago Interior Design - Published by Julia-Chicago

Fall is upon us in Chicago and although I will miss the Summer, I am looking forward to the changing leaves, beautiful autumn colors, and of course, all things pumpkin. Pumpkin Spice Latte, yes please!

With Fall also comes the annual festival that takes place in the heart of the Grand Avenue Design District where I am happy to call home to my Buckingham Interiors + Design Studio and Showroom! Formerly known as Design Harvest, the all-new Grand Art & Design Festival will take place in West Town on Saturday, September 26th and Sunday, September 27th from 11 am to 8 pm.

The festival will continue the Design Harvest tradition of showcasing local home and garden design vendors, however this year there is much, much more!

Local artisans, handmade goods, clothing, jewelry designers, neighborhood vendors, a Happy Hour, and live music...

Everyone loves a great food truck as well. Enjoy everything from tamales to lobster rolls, mac n' cheese to cupcakes!

Bring the kiddos as there are also hayrides and lots of family activities.

I will be opening the doors of my Buckingham I+D Showroom the entire weekend of the festival. Come check out the beautiful new art exhibits by Artists Francine Turk and Richard Shipps, special festival pricing on the entire Showroom of Modernique® accessories, furniture, and lighting, and also my new Julia Buckingham for Global Views Collection (Don't think I will ever get tired of saying that!:))

**Stop in Thursday and Friday for 1st Dibs! Showroom is open 11am-6pm**

Hope to see y'all there!

Las Vegas, Here We Come!

Chicago Design Blog | Material Girls | Chicago Interior Design - Published by Julia-Chicago

It has truly been a whirlwind summer! It's hard to believe it is almost August and we are on to the Las Vegas Market beginning this weekend. Attending the summer markets in Dallas and Atlanta and finally introducing my collection with Global Views to the world has been an incredible experience. It has been a year in the making and I can't tell you my excitement to share it with y'all.

LOVE my designer gal pals Denise McGaha and Marlaina Teich sharing a giggle at the Hampton Designer Showhouse with my Chartreuse Bella Grapes!

It is just the tip of the iceberg! The greater balance of the collection will be introduced in October at High Point Market and people will really be able to see the versatile, personal and expressive nature of the entire group.

It is a dream come true to curate a design project of mine with my own designed accessories. I just placed my alabaster Bella grapes in a client project as well as these fabulous glass "Dew Drops" and it was so surreal!

The items are already starting to trickle into my Buckingham Interiors + Design Showroom in Chicago!

A few of the early arrivers…Bubbles in Blue, The Hex Decanters and Glassware, the Pink Dew Drops and Sunset Crown, and the Chainlink Vessel!

Check out the sneak peak of the Julia Buckingham for Global Views collection here.

If you are attending Las Vegas Market, stop by the newly expanded Global Views Showroom and say hi during our Launch Party!

We're Back!

Dallas Blog | Material Girls | Dallas Interior Design - Published by Emily-Dallas

Hello fellow Dallasites! Haven't forgotten about us have you? We apologize for such a long overdue post, but never fear, because we have SO much exciting news to share with you all about what's been happening with EJ Interiors! We have been busy, busy, busy these last few months focusing on our design projects and trying not to melt in this Texas heat!

EJ Interiors has been fortunate enough to be featured in numerous press articles in recent months! We are so excited to see our hard work showcased this summer in a few different publications and ecstatic to finally be able to share it with all of you. Check out some of the great articles we've been featured in and let us know what you think!

In May, we were featured in House Beautiful magazine in their monthly Paint article that showcased a room we designed alongside our advice on choosing the best paint color for a sunny room (definitely helpful during this time of year! You Texans know what I"m talking about ;)

In June, it was announced that EJ Interiors was one of six winners of the third annual D Home Magazine Life in Color contest! This contest is put on by D Home magazine, Texas Paint and Wallpaper and Benjamin Moore paints. Our client's quirky "Living End" piano room was featured alongside the other five winner's rooms. The article was in the July/August 2015 edition of D Home magazine.

In July, Southern Home Magazine chose an EJ Interiors' room to grace the cover of their Autumn 2015 issue with a ten page feature. The article, titled "Blue Reveries" showcases the Davidson home, which was updated from a dark and dated space into a modern and colorful space for a wonderful family! We absolutely loved how this one turned out. It's on newsstands at Target and Barnes and Noble from now until October!

In August, we were featured in Luxe Interiors + Design Magazine alongside other designers chatting about one of our favorite art galleries in Dallas.

We are so grateful and excited about how this year has gone so far and are looking forward to the next few months of 2015! It's true what they say, "Design Never Sleeps", and we cannot wait to see what's in store for us next! Thank you to everyone who made this year such a successful one here at EJ Interiors, we couldn't have done it without you. (and we promise that we will be back with some exciting new blog posts here soon!)

Wine and Jazz with the Los Angeles Jazz Society

Los Angeles Design Blog | Material Girls | LA Interior Design - Published by Jill-LA

Last weekend I got to attend a summer evening wine and jazz event hosted by the Los Angeles Jazz Society. The event took place at a private home with a resort like backyard of lush landscaping. There was poolside live music and nine California wineries participated in providing tastings. My friend Allan and I enjoyed an evening of food, wine tasting, and live music.

Art and design go hand in hand and I've been fortunate to work with many talented artists through the years, both curating pieces for my design clients and for the rotating art exhibits in my Buckingham Interiors + Design Showroom in Chicago.

One of my absolute favorite installations in my Showroom still to this day is this gallery wall by Chicago-based Artist Francine Turk.

Francine Turk breaks the rules of constraint. As artist and visionary behind Francine Turk Studio, Turk seamlessly blends thoughtful beauty with the dramatically raw and vulnerable nuances of life. Her artwork stems from a constant excavation of her truth and is revealed as a layered expression of emotion and discovery, evoking a connective and visceral response from the viewer.

In its layered complexities and juxtapositions, she expresses this embodiment of her artwork as both delicate marks of charcoal on paper and fearless representations of what it means to be a rebel, a forger of one’s own path.

Turk is influenced and inspired by great artists like Picasso and Matisse yet compared to contemporaries like confessional artist, Tracy Emin. She also draws inspiration from musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Jack White, who, in Turk’s eyes, have been fearless in their pursuit of personal truth. Given the complexity of influences and her own highly expressive and layered technique, she is not compelled to confine her work to a particular genre.

Much in demand by collectors worldwide, Turk's acclaimed works are housed in private and corporate collections across the globe. Her most well received solo exhibitions include Bad Ass (2011), A Decade of Evolution (2012) and Verite (2014). She has been part of group exhibitions alongside Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Andy Warhol, Helen Frankenthaler, Marlene Dumas and the like.

I recently reached out to Francine to discover she was "headquartered" in Barcelona for the month of June! I was instantly wishing I was back in Spain as well taking day trips to the countryside. We certainly share our love of travel and inspiration!

Francine was in Spain for continued inspirations for the "Love Letter to A Matador" series. For the first time ever, Francine sent a private invitation to collectors to be a part of this journey by purchasing work created in Spain that would mark the beginnings of an upcoming solo show. A limited number of "site unseen" pieces were made available to collectors only as a presale and quickly sold out within days. It was a true exercise in gratitude to thank collectors for supporting her over the years as the pieces were made available for a fraction of the market value.

Picasso has always been a huge influence on Francine’s work and this trip was no exception- especially his “bous” (bull) studies. She named each of the 27 sold works in Catalan. She was influenced by cubist and expressionist styles using charcoal, ink and oil sticks. The culture in Barcelona was also a huge influence on this series.  Back alleys hosted a variety of street performers, opera singers and men fighting with fire at every turn.  She created bous and matadors with undertones of romance, mystery, sex and masculinity.

Francine stayed in the gothic quarter where graffiti was prevalent and influential. She visited a flea market acquiring ledger books, antique hand written letters and vintage postcards, which she used as the background for thank you notes to her collectors.  She enclosed this personalized note with each piece and shipped the work in drawing tubes from Barcelona.

Follow along Francine's entire journey on Instagram (@francineturk) and at www.francineturk.com.

An upcoming exhibit of Francine's work will be in the Buckingham I+D Showroom. Stay tuned!

xx,

Julia

My "Pinch Me" Moment

Houston Design Blog | Material Girls | Houston Interior Design - Published by Lauren-Houston

A snapshot of the just some of the beautiful flowers on our photoshoot last week for a national magazine - so exciting!  I can't wait to share this feature, a real "pinch me" moment.  Lauren Haskett Fine Design has been blessed with so many amazing clients over the past almost five years.  We are wrapping up some great projects and are now accepting clients for Spring/Summer 2015.  Please email me at [email protected] to inquire about working with us!  We take on all types of projects - single room, renovations, but I have to say my passion is new construction.  I absolutely love getting in at the very early stages and working with the architect, builder, and client to create the perfect home.  Trust me, it's never too early to call an Interior Designer when planning your new build!  I can only take on a few new constructions at a time so let me know if you are building and would like to talk to me about working together!

Wash The Winter Blues Away

New York Design Blog | Material Girls | New York Interior Design - Published by Rebecca-NY

Every year Winter hits us (without much warning) like a ton of bricks.  The first snowfall is magical and we're quickly reminded of all the things Winter has to offer: skiing, sledding, snowball fights, hot chocolate, warm sweaters, fuzzy boots and fires.  It's certainly a time of year that, although cold --  very, very cold --  can bring a lot of fun through outdoor activities with family and friends.  However,  these long and cold days tend to drag on and on, and as soon as the groundhog sees his shadow (expressing 6 more weeks of winter) I think we're all ready for that first day of Spring.  With that being said, I was recently inspired by an artist, Kerri Rosenthal, who doesn't live too far from where I grew up in CT. Her warm, expressive paintings not only bring brightness and cheer to a space but they also have an incredible way of lifting your spirits when you enter the room.  Colors speak volumes and can transform your space and your mood on a cold Winter's day.  Take a look at some of Kerri's work below and if your Winter is dragging on like most of us in the NorthEast, it might be time to illuminate your days and remind yourself that Spring is just around the corner.

If these paintings and colors don't brighten your mood and prepare you for warmer days ahead, I don't know what will.  Not only will a fresh new painting bring inspiration and happiness to your mind but it will breathe new light in your home - that just might be needing a boost of sunshine.  For more information on Kerri and her artwork you can visit her site here.

Never Met a Small Stripe I Didn't Like

Houston Design Blog | Material Girls | Houston Interior Design - Published by Lauren-Houston

One of my all time favorite homes (seen above and below)  - the Madrid apartment of Carolina Herrera Baez as seen in Elle Decor

I seriously never met a small stripe I didn't like!  So simple, so chic.  It could work in pretty much any room.  Carolina Herrera Baez proves you can even use in multiple rooms of your home.  Walls, furniture, bedding, pillows, the uses are endless!

Another top favorite home - Ivanka Trump's old apartment as decorated by Emma Jane Pilkington.  Proof that a small stripe is the perfect compliment to a mix of color and patterns.

Ms. Iisha Goes to Washington!

Dallas Blog | Material Girls | Dallas Interior Design - Published by Emily-Dallas

We are so proud of our former intern, Iisha, who was chosen as a volunteer to help decorate the White House for the holidays!  What an amazing opportunity and challenge!  I don't know about you, but decorating my 1930s cottage for the holidays sometimes seems overwhelming, so can you imagine what goes into decorating a 55,000 square foot national landmark!

Each year a theme is chosen for the White House's holiday decor.  I wish I could transform my holiday decor from year to year!   This year's theme is "A Children's Winter Wonderland" which celebrates the Christmas spirit as viewed through the eyes of a child.  Iisha flew to Washington D.C. on Thanksgiving Day and spent the next five days in a whirwind of holiday decorating, surrounded by tinsel and ornaments galore!  The White House provides the volunteers with decor, tools, and inspiration photos to help them complete this enormous task.  Iisha worked individually and as part of a team to decorate two rooms and a hallway in the East Wing of the White House.

Iisha with one of the many White House Christmas Trees!

A Winter Wonderland!

Iisha and the Obama's dogs- Bo and Sunny

This year's theme also honored the Armed Forces and their families.  The East Wing featured a Christmas Tree decorated with gold ornaments which represented our nation's fallen heroes.  Iisha also had the privilege of being chosen as one of a few volunteers to greet military families on a holiday tour of the White House.  This was particularly meaningful for Iisha because her dad served in the U.S. Army.

On the final night of her stay, Iisha attended a volunteer reception where the first lady made a speaking appearance!  To top it off, Iisha met Genevieve Gorder, who is hosting an HGTV special on the 2014 White House Christmas decor.  The special will replay on December 24 at 7am/6 c on HGTV, so set your DVR and tune in!

Be sure to check out #WHHolidays for some behind the scenes experiences of White House visitors.

Congratulations Iisha on this honor and thank you for sharing your White House holiday experience with Material Girls!

Cuckoo for Camo

New York Design Blog | Material Girls | New York Interior Design - Published by Rebecca-NY

I'm recently obsessed with anything camouflage which may or may not be trending at the moment -- but I'm not sure it matters when it comes to Andy Warhol's camo prints.  If you like anything Andy Warhol, you're going to love these prints.  Full of color and movement these pieces can certainly pack a punch.  The versatility is endless too -- I can see these prints in a living room, a playroom, a kitchen, a kids room, a den..you get the point.  If you can't afford the real deal, there are plenty of reproduction prints for sale at places like art.com - just make sure you frame it so it looks like an original ;)

The lime greens make me think of Spring which puts a smile on my face

A whole lotta fluorescent

A smaller scaled camo

Anything fuschia is bound to brighten a space

A series of colorful camos - genius!

These skateboards would be great in the kids space

I guess I've got a project ahead of me!  I'm thinking I'll give this Warhol thing a whirl

The Power of One Piece of Art

New York Design Blog | Material Girls | New York Interior Design - Published by Rebecca-NY

Most people struggle to find that one piece of furniture or the right throw pillows that are going to help complete their space -- without realizing that one single piece of art can do the trick.  House Beautiful recently posted an article showing four different spaces that are dramatically improved by artwork.  Take a look at these four spaces as well as four additional spaces I found that will show you how to transform your space.  Art is of course very personal, so I'll leave that up to you, but I suggest spending the money on your walls.  It changes the space and often gets people talking if it's placed in the right spot

This rather neutral room is quickly brightened with pops of yellow, red and azure

The bright orange velvet chair is brought to life with its accompanying bright painting

This entry without art would be exceptionally bland

This is a nice play on both color and geometrics

While this art is simple it still brings a sense of completion

Big and bold

This art brings the golds, blues and greys full circle

Don't be afraid to do anything oversize
