I’ve finally added a a much sought after fruit to my list of fruiting plants in tubs. I’ve got orange, lemon, satsuma, cherry, nectarine, apple, grape and now fig. If you’ve never eaten a fig straight off the tree, then you have never tasted anything quite so sweet and succulent.
The picture above is a stock photo, my fig plant is only a few centimetres tall but it’s taken well to tub life and hopefully should be fruiting in a couple of years.
I first tasted fig straight off the tree when we moved to Cyprus. We rented a property that had it’s own very small vineyard as well as pears, plums and a fig tree. I didn’t realise what the fruit was until I looked it up. It was December and the fruit was large, green and solid. After I discovered what it was using the internet I couldn’t wait to try it once ripened. My only other taste of a fig was at Christmas, as a kid. My parents always bought dried figs and dates during Christmas. Never a fan of dates, I was the only one who seemed to like figs. That’s still true in our household because once the figs were ripened on the tree in Cyprus, turning a very dark blue/black they were ready for tasting. My wife hated the taste and I loved it. The tree was soon empty of figs.
One other thing about figs which seems to be an old wives tale is what they do to your digestive system. It may be true for others, but not for me.
