Australia: Busselton Jetty

On my recent trip to Australia I saw many interesting places and met some lovely and kind people. There was no part of the trip that I found uninteresting, but it wasn’t until I came back and started writing up my Travelogue for publication that I’ve found I also missed a few gems as well. One of these was Busselton Jetty.

It wasn’t so much that I missed it, it’s just that it’s such an unassuming place for someone who was brought up on visiting piers at many seaside towns in England. I saw it and noted what it was. It’s a long pier that sticks out into the Indian Ocean at the seaside town of Busselton. That much was obvious. I even noted that it had a transport system on it. But being short of time on the visit, it was the final full day in Busselton, and in need of a good meal I had to forgo a closer look. Big mistake for a wannabe travel blogger.

Looking at my notes and all the leaflets I picked up on my travels I’ve just come across a map of the jetty and I am gobsmacked at all the things you can do and see. It’s the sort of place you would expect see at any seaside town in Britain. Brighton, Blackpool anywhere on the Isle of Wight come to mind. But no, this gem is in Western Australia and is very much worth a return visit.

Apart from a ride on the Jetty Train, you can the Interpretive Centre, Swim platforms, Dive and Snorkeling areas, Underwater Helmet Tour, the Underwater Observatory and Art section at the end of the Jetty plus lots more to see and do. I mean, it’s a big long Jetty and would keep your kids interested for quite a while, so how come I missed it? Slap on the wrist for being in a hurry. So I’m looking forward to my next visit, to feed the ‘big kid interest’ in me.
