Living in Cyprus: Saving Mickey Mouse

Early this morning it was my rare pleasure to save an animal’s life.

As I let my English Springer Spaniels out in the early morning for a pee, I noticed what appeared to be a brown leaf in our pool. On closer inspection I saw it was a mouse. It’s not unusual, we often get mice or lizards try to get water from the pool during the night and some fall in and drown overnight. But this one was head up and body down which meant it was possibly still alive, possibly exhausted and on the brink of drowning.

Problem was, my pool net was ripped away from the frame during winter storms and I now had no means in which to help the poor creature. The only way was to grab an empty plant pot, lie flat and try and scoop the poor animal into it, without pushing the poor thing under the water. It was just at the reach of my outstretched arm, but luckily I did it on the first try. I emptied out the excess water and then managed to wedge the plant pot the bedraggled mouse was in wedged safely into a larger plant pot with a bush in it. That would give it adequate cover from predators, like my dogs, giving it time to recover. It was only very young and not long out the nest, wherever that was. So, I left it hidden where it was and went indoors.

Ten minutes later I was out again and checking to see if the mouse had managed to recover. But the poor creature was still there, even more bedraggled and shivering with the cold. Time to give it some TLC. I used an old duster and folded it over to form a mini blanket, placed it over the creature and left it in peace. Only time would tell if it survived.

Half an hour later I looked again and the mouse was gone. There was no chance of the dogs killing it as they couldn’t have reached it and no cat would have dared enter our garden with the dogs on patrol there. So I’m hoping I did a good deed that saw a poor helpless creature on its way.

Just don’t thank me by invading my house, Mickey, or you may find your self released a few miles away next time.
