Looking for a new snack option at The Magic Kingdom? Look no further! Just a couple of weeks ago, The Friar's Nook in Fantasyland introduced the brand new Fried Twinkie! Ooooooo!
This little beauty is a Hostess Twinkie, (Just in case you are not familiar, the Twinkie is a yellow sponge cake, filled with a white, vanilla frosting/creme, that has a somewhat marshmallowy consistency.), coated in a sweet batter, and deep fried. You then get your choice of chocolate drizzle, strawberry drizzle or caramel drizzle, and a dusting of powdered sugar.
When I decided to try this treat out, I regretfully did not have The Hubs with me. Fried Twinkies are pretty much his FAVORITE thing from local fairs and festivals, so I knew he would be excited about this. Personally, I am not a big Twinkie fan, nor am I a huge fried food fan, but I had to try it. You know... for research. This snack is $4.99 and it does count as a Dining Plan Snack Credit.
I went with the chocolate drizzle option. The Twinkie was served hot and I had to wait a bit to bite into it. There was very little batter on it, in fact, I'm not 100% sure there was any batter. It may have just been a fried Twinkie, period. The fried Twinkies I have tried at fairs have had a thicker, cake-like batter around them, but this Twinkie barely looked larger than it's regular size. It was served in a paper boat instead of the iconic stick I have seen at local fairs.
When it was cool enough to bite, I gave it a whirl. I was pleasantly surprised to find the outside coating somewhat crispy, and the inside still soft and spongy. The heat of the fryer did melt down the filling, making it quite liquidy. It was definitely a messy eat, and I would recommend a fork and knife, which I was too impatient to get. Overall, I would say that Twinkie-lovers will love this new option. As for me... I'm going to stick to the cookie/ice cream sandwiches from Sleepy Hollow.
