Tips And Tricks To Save On Fuel Costs For Your RV

Tags: fuel tank engine

RVing is great fun, but it can be quite harsh on your pocket because of the ever-rising gas prices. It is a wise decision to try to save some bucks at the gas station. Even though your motorhome might seem to be a Fuel guzzler, you can use the following tips to save some cash on your next trip:

1. Where the rubber meets the road – literally

Want to hit the road? No way you are doing that without having considered the status of your RV’s tires. Keep in mind that tires have a large impact on fuel consumption, and if they can’t perform as expected, you might have to stop at about every gas pump. Before you warm up the Engine of your motorhome, consider having the tires checked to ascertain that they are in good condition.

2. Travel cooler

We all hate hot, uncomfortable weather – who doesn’t? As such, you might have no option other than powering on the air conditioner in your RV when things get hot as you travel. However, have you considered traveling at cooler times of the day? That can save you much fuel, considering that air conditioners need power to run.

3. How’s the condition under the hood

Your engine’s condition is another thing you need to factor in if you want to get excellent fuel efficiency. Running a properly maintained engine guarantees you optimum performance, which translates to better use of fuel. As such, have your engine regularly serviced to keep it functioning as it should If you are looking to save some dollars.

4. Heavy load, light wallet

Another thing you need to be on the lookout for is the amount of weight you have when heading out. Carry the whole house, and you might need to have a tanker truck escort you to your destination. The best thing to do is to ensure that you reduce the amount of load as much as you can. That way, your engine won’t have to use up too much fuel from pulling some extra weight. Remember to carry only what you need, and if you can, purchase your supplies when you near your destination.

5. Balance matters

It might seem like weight distribution in the RV or trailer doesn’t matter, but the sad truth is that it does. You don’t want to keep all your heavy objects at the back, while the sides and front remain idle. As such, try as much as you can to distribute weight in the motorhome.

6. Be easy

Did you know that being so harsh on your engine can make it consume more fuel? Pushing the gas pedal to the floor when coming from a halt makes your car need more power to gain speed fast. To get such power, you have to be willing to sacrifice some good amount of fuel. If, however, you want to save some fuel, be easy on the pedal and try to keep the ride smooth.

7. Avoid the weekend hassle

In most places, fuel prices tend to go higher during the weekend, for reasons that you might not understand so easily. What you need to know, however, is that buying your fuel in the middle of the week can help you save some cash to keep you rolling during the vacation. Why not get that gas can and purchase some extra fuel to keep your engines running through the weekend?

8. Shop around for fuel

There are apps like Gas Buddy that can show you local gas prices. You can always look around and find some of the cheaper gas stations near you. It doesn’t hurt to save some few bucks, does it?

9. Empty your tank

Which tank are we talking about here? Of course, it’s not the gas tank – we are concentrating on the freshwater tank. There is no need to travel with a full water tank, unless when you are Boondocking. Filling your RV’s tank impacts the final weight, and as mentioned above, extra weight is not good for fuel efficiency. It would be best if you also remembered to empty holding tanks before leaving your vacation destination.

10. Reduce wind resistance

You never want to drive without an A/C cover and with the antenna up as that can only lead to a lot of wind resistance, which in turn increases fuel consumption.
