Cycling holidays in Holland

October Half Term is the ideal time to get back to nature and escape from the daily grind before winter sets in. However, it’s sometimes hard to find something suitable for the whole family that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. At HolidayParkSpecials, we decided to suggest a few ideas and take the hassle out of finding the perfect half term break for you and the kids. This week, we’ve written about the highs of cycling in the lowlands. Holland is the land of the bicycle, and there really is no better way of getting to know the stunning Dutch landscape than from the seat of a bike. Our holiday parks in Holland often have a bicycle rental service, so you can spend your days exploring the surroundings before returning to the comfort of your holiday cottage. Have a fantastic October half term break!

Cycling around the Ijsselmeer

The Ijsselmeer is a large lake in the centre of Holland, surrounded  by charming villages, tulip fields and windmills. If you want to experience the typical Dutch landscape, then the Ijsselmeer is the place to go. With over 400km of cycle paths around the lake, it is a popular destination for cycling families, and a great way to introduce the kids into the art of the bicycle. Cycling on the flat is pure pleasure, and there’s no better way to get to know your surroundings than from the seat of a Dutch bike! While you’re here, you can visit the picturesque villages of North Holland like Volendam, Edam and Marken. These villages have retained much of their old-world charm; visit the medieval cheese market in Edam, taste some delicious smoked eel in Volendam or spot the traditional dress of the older inhabitants in Marken. Have a look at our holiday parks near the Ijsselmeer and enjoy an active adventure with the whole family!

Cycling in the Veluwe

From wetlands to woodland, the Veluwe is markedly different from the region surrounding the Ijsselmeer. Characterised by forests, sand dunes and heathlands, the Veluwe is most well-known for its National Park. De Hoge Veluwe National Park is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including red deer, wild boar, mouflon and roe deer. October half term is the best time of year to visit, with the forests glowing luminous shades of red and orange. For some art and culture, a visit to the Kröller-Müller Museum is an absolute must. Situated in one of Europe’s largest sculpture gardens, this museum has an extensive outdoor gallery which is perfectly complemented by the stunning natural surroundings. Have a look at our holiday parks in the Veluwe and discover this wild and diverse natural region.

Cycling in Limburg

A cycling holiday in Limburg is for the slightly tougher folk out there. In contrast to the rest of the country, Limburg features hills! Gears will come in slightly more handy in this region, with the biggest hill reaching 322 metres. Limburg is famous for its half-timbered houses, delicious cuisine and provincial character. Spend the day cycling through the rich and varied landscape, and return to your holiday cottage for a relaxing evening in front of the open fire.  Check out our holiday parks in Limburg and enjoy an active getaway this October half term.

Not only do you have first-class facilities waiting for you upon arrival, but there are activities for all ages, meaning everyone is happy!
