iPhone 7 could have 32GB storage as new minimum

Tags: iphone

Starting with the Iphone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Apple decided to distinguish the two models by 1) minimum storage, 2) display size, and 3) OIS or lack thereof. We’ve already heard a rumor that Apple intends to bring OIS to the regular iPhone 7 to produce better photos, but we’ve now gotten a tip that Apple intends to bring the storage of its “Plus” model to the regular iPhone 7. In other words, the next-generation iPhone will come with 32GB instead of the base 16GB of storage that has been present since earlier iPhone models. IHS Market Research Director Kevin Wang says that the supply chain is telling him, “the new iPhone’s RAM is 2GB, ROM 32GB onwards.” We’ve seen the 2GB of RAM that Apple has placed in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, but the 32GB minimum storage rumor is a new one indeed.

Apple’s iPhone storage is the discussion of every tech enthusiast, considering that Apple’s rival in the smartphone space, Samsung, has bumped up the storage of all its high-end “Galaxies” (Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S7, and Galaxy S7 edge, as the most recent) to 32GB of storage and no less. The company has brought “app thinning” to iOS 9 whereby only significant and necessary portions of app code make their way onto devices instead of portions that users don’t need, but it appears as though Apple is done trying to milk 16GB for more than what it’s worth.

At the same time, however, Apple has always raised the price of its iPhone whenever bumping up the technology (example: the iPhone 6 Plus that costs $799 out of the box, as opposed to the iPhone 6 that retailed for $649. So, Apple’s past precedent has been to raise the cost by $100 whenever it does something like increase storage; the company has done it with the iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6s Plus. Why would Apple not do it with the iPhone 7?

Other rumors about the iPhone 7 pertain to the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack, iOS 10, a glass and metal design for this year, and waterproofing for the upcoming flagship. To be honest, a lot of the rumors about the upcoming devices matches what Samsung has done in its Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, so we’ll keep our ears to the ground to see just what’s true and what’s nothing more than hype.
