Oliver & Nubia: Photo fun with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100!

Hi everyone,

Today we are looking at one of the latest cameras from Panasonic, the Panasonic LX100.

Nubia: What is this?

This is a very amazing handy little camera that comes with a fantastic lens. For those of you familiar with camera specifications it has a maximum aperture range of F1.7-2.8 and an effective focal range of 24-75mm (LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMILUX Lens). The camera itself has a large Four Thirds Mos Sensor. This means that the camera is fantastic for low light photography.

You know how difficult it often is to take photos of your fast moving cats? This camera has a solution for this problem as well! Panasonic provides a unique 4K Video to photo conversion. Meaning that you can record a scene of your cats to create your favourite shots of it!😀

Simply play back the 4K video on your camera and you can click through frame by frame to export single frames as still photos. The exported photos are 8MP so will work perfectly for most things such as using them on your Website or Blog.

Below are two sample shots for which we made use of that feature:

Oliver: *Yawn*
Oliver: You still videong me?😮

Another great aspect is that it is very silent so if you are taking photos of your cat it won’t scare / wake / distract them! And of course the camera is very quick at focussing so even normal shots turn out far more often well focussed while taking pictures of cats.

The camera is also Wifi enabled which means it’s easy to connect it to other devices such as your PC.

Photos can be imported using Panasonic’s own software which is included with the camera or if you are on Mac you can also import them using your regular photos app.

Overall verdict:
This is a great alternative to bulkier and more expensive SLR cameras. At just 393gram in weight this camera will fit into your handbag for any occasion. As it’s part of the easy point and shoot range of Panasonic it’s a great way for hobbyists to enter the world of more professional photography!

If you are just starting out and want to use the auto modes you’ll be able to take great photos without much hassle. But once you feel ready to take the next step you can play around with all of the extra settings such as exposure and filter options. And of course the camera is capable of taking photos in RAW format, which will allow you to do far more post photo editing!

I think one of my favourite photos was Oliver on his green fur:

As you can see we managed to capture him perfectly with both eyes looking bright :D

We have prepared a gallery of sample shots for you so you can take a look at the quality of different scenarios / lighting. All shots have not been post-edited which could increase the quality of some of them but we wanted to give you an idea of what can be done without much knowledge of photoshop.

At £499 the camera may seem expensive to some people but don’t forget that this camera comes with a (LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMILUX Lens) that is extremely fast at autofocusing and great in low light. While you can’t replace the lens it comes with the perfect zoom range for walk-around shots as well as close-ups etc.

Where to buy:
For those of you in the UK you can get them from places such as John Lewis or Amazon.
In the US you can also purchase them directly on the Panasonic eShop.
