Hotel Jagdgut Wachtelhof review

ThirstyHubby (aka Stewart) found Hotel Jagdgut Wachtelhof when searching Small Luxury Hotels in Europe and it looked so adorable that we decided to venture to the Ski Amade area(the Hochkönig region in particular), even though none of our friends or people we chatted with had ever heard of the area.

Once we got there we understood why. The tourists are mostly from Germany, Austria and the Netherlands; hearing anyone speaking English was rare—which we didn’t mind!

The hotel is located in Hinterthal, a tiny village with nothing really to see or do apart from enjoying the hotel and eating at the delicious Amelia’s Corner across the street.

The hotel has just 17 rooms, and is outfitted throughout in quaint Austrian mountain décor. We loved the cute touches, like the fur throws, around the property and our only pet peeve was all the fake fireplaces. If you aren’t allowed to have real ones, maybe do a modern cool one but not one that pretends to be a fireplace?

Our overall stay was lovely, with small service issues that weren’t too bad.  The phone systems, for example, had problems for a day, so when we called (to arrange pick-up at the ski mountain), it rang to their sister property in Hamburg, Germany. Some of the employees didn’t speak English and at breakfast one day we were moved around as we didn’t have a table reserved (we weren’t told we needed one—and many of the guests were put off to find the breakfast frau shooing them away from their preferred table).

But overall, lovely and cute, with the most amazing breakfast ever. Actually probably the best hotel breakfast we have ever had! The dinner food was also good—classic Austrian fare done to high standards.

They have a golf cart covered with furs on hand to transport you to the slopes (located 3 minutes away) so you don’t have to carry all your stuff—it gets a sometimes quizzical, sometimes impressed wry smile from other skiers lugging their gear through the mountain parking lot.

Jagdgut Wachtelhof has a ski room on site, as well as a lovely spa with a dry sauna, cold plunge shower (a bucket of icy cold water hangs threateningly over your warm shower) and an outdoor Jacuzzi with a lovely overlook of the river that borders the back of the property.  The gently babbling river makes for very peaceful mountain white noise should you sleep with windows open at night.

We wish we could have used their movie theatre on property whenever we wanted and that they had arranged movie nights like they mention on the website, but maybe it got lost in translation.

In sum: an adorable, charming hotel befitting the Austrian Alps, just one hour from Salzburg.  See my full review of the broader area and our itinerary.
