Does Your Home Have ‘Hygge?’

Tags: hygge candle fall

Last year was a huge time for hygge, Oxford Dictionary’s Word of the Year for 2016. Hygge is the Danish concept for coziness and comfort, creating feelings of warmth, contentment, or well-being. And it makes for a perfect home environment: welcoming and wonderful!

Last week was the first day of Fall, and we’re in one of the two seasons when hygge is its most perfect, fall and winter. As it gets colder, we all tend to “nest” more, spending more time at home or inside. So it’s the ideal time to look at how to create this concept for your environment. So invite over some friends, make hot drinks, and follow these tips for a perfectly hygge time.

Light candles or a fire

Is there anything more appealing than the warm glow from candles or a fire? Combine the two — a roaring fire with candles on the mantel — and it’s enchanting, indeed. That’s one reason fall and winter are such great seasons to create hygge: it’s colder and we naturally crave the warmth of these things. If you want to create drama, buy a bag of tea light candles and put them on the mantel and coffee table (of course, follow Candle safety rules and never use them within reach of a child).

Get cozy with throw blankets and pillows

Throw blanks and pillows not only serve a practical purpose — warmth — but an aesthetic one, as well. Soft, nubbly textures create a snug feel and rich colors, like jewel tones, are perfect for making a room feel hygge. I recommend switching out pillows and throws seasonally to help with the ambiance of any room.

Lower the lights

Bright overhead lights are not conducive to creating the hygge feel in your home. So turn them off and flip on lamps, instead. With the candles and fireplace, you’ll have a warm glow in every room. You might consider switching out bright 120-watt bulbs with something more soft, as well.
