Should you let your child keep a blog?

A guest post by Lucy Wyndham.

Children are becoming more and more technology savvy nowadays. And apart from knowing their way around social media, some have even taken to blogging as a hobby or to make some extra money.

While current statistics are unavailable at the moment, it was found that in 2010, 11% of European children who used the Internet wrote a blog, with some starting to write about their day-to-day experiences or interests at the tender age of 9.

With the popularity of bloggers such as Tavi Gevinson, who started her highly successful blog Style Rookie at the age of 11, it’s no wonder that more children are following in her footsteps in hope of becoming the next child blogger wonder.

However, there are pros and cons to Letting a child have their own blog.  So the question is, should you let your child keep a blog? Here’s what you need to know.

Pros to letting your child keep a blog

It helps improve a child’s writing and communication skills

There are some things that children don’t learn in school, and communicating well is one of them. Blogging can help your child improve their communication skills as they learn to respond to comments and communicate with readers.

Being able to express oneself through a blog is also a way to develop one’s writing skills which can be highly useful later in life. Dependency on Google and other writing software have caused the art of writing to decline. So by blogging, your child can develop their own writing style and learn to get their message across to the intended audience.

It gives your child a productive way to use his or her free time

Though some children will willingly go out to enjoy the benefits of outdoor play during their free time, other kids still prefer to stay indoors and spend time on the computer.

Instead of watching videos or playing online games, blogging is a better and more productive way for a child to use their free time as they get to turn a passion into profit, especially once a parent helps them learn about affiliate marketing.

It improves a child’s computer skills

Editing, posting photos, uploading videos and the like on a regular basis helps a child learn about Internet content and visuals. Moreover, it improves a child’s computer skills which is always useful in this modern age.

Cons to letting your child keep a blog

It can lead to cyber stalking

There are some Internet users that prey on the young. Letting your child keep a blog for all the world to see can allow unsavoury characters to have access to your child.

To protect your child from cyber bullying and online predators, never let them use their full name, address, school name, and other personal information on their blog.

It’s also advisable not to post their pictures online. You can also monitor your child’s blog on a daily basis and read the comments to see if someone is cyber stalking your little one.

It can take up most of his time

Some children can get too engrossed in a hobby that they don’t have enough time to study or spend time talking to family members.

As a parent, you can establish rules about Internet use and let your child know that they can only spend a certain amount of time on their blog. Be consistent in enforcing the rule so that your child knows that you are serious about monitoring their time online.

Letting a child keep a blog has its advantages and drawbacks, but in the end, it’s up to you to decide whether you should allow your child to keep a blog.

Does your child keep a blog?

If you allow your kid to keep a blog, then make time to monitor online activities. Provide feedback on content and photos, and set Internet usage rules to keep them safe online and still have time for a balanced life.

Above all, be supportive. It’s one of the best ways to let your child know that you’re their number one fan.

Let me know through the comments below your thoughts about letting your child keep a blog, I would love to hear from you.
