Adulthood (Growing Up) is the time of life when one is expected to take responsibility for one’s actions and well being. Contrary to the definition of adulthood ( which is parenthood and marriage), adulthood is being financially independent, completing school or training, getting a steady job, and leaving home.
I’m becoming an adult, and I’ve come to realize that things are a lot different than I thought they’d be. Responsibility is not so fun. Food, shelter, clothes are not free. Now I can understand why the prodigal son had to return. There are bills to be paid. When you’re sick, you have to go to the doctor’s alone, take care of yourself, with no one to hold your hands and make sure you’re taking your medication and eating properly. As an adult, it becomes your responsibility to take care of yourself and make yourself happy, you owe it to yourself. There is the possibility that your family and friends might forget your birthday, you need to learn to handle the disappointment well, one day, you might even forget your own birthday.

Deciding to get up early in the morning to work when you’d rather sleep a little longer, having to manage resources and time, choosing to pay to learn a skill rather than going out and spending the money with friends on drinks and food. Us 20-somethings are expected to have our lives all figured out, to know the things we want, and how to get them. Often, we are termed lazy, entitled, and undetermined when we’re confused about what we actually want to do. We rely on the adults in our lives to hold our hands and show us the way but most times, they disappoint. You are responsible for your life, find yourself, find your passion. These people owe you nothing but their support. You save yourself a lot if you can understand that.
The Craze We Experienced Growing Up
Adultness is a stage we’re all expected to be working hard, bringing back money home, and developing romantic relationships. Adulthood so far. My night routine is completely different than I thought it would be. After the busy day, I expect to have a very relaxing night, meditate, watch few movies, drink juice and chat long hours with friends but now, I have to think of meeting up deadlines, making research, finishing a book, and catching up with a class.
I thought being an adult means I get all the time in the world to spend time with friends, have parties, go out together, do exactly what I want and when I want, and have an amazing time of our lives. I thought my social life was going to be amazing and active. Finally, I will travel around the world, maybe. Now, everyone is busy trying to build something for themselves. Suddenly, we need to think of our account balance before we make any purchase.
I’ve always seen adulthood as the time of my life where I get to cook more, try new recipes and be on a diet, I definitely lack the energy for that now. I’m barely consistent in my workout and I eat whatever that’s available.
“Getting to maturity, I’m definitely going to get a job, I’ll be handed a car and a house. I’ll live happily ever after”. We all thought that was going to happen. I did too! So far, am learning that nothing good comes easy in life, especially in adulthood. I thought I’d be making a lot of money when I become an adult. I guess I never planned how that was going to be possible. I assumed that Growing up was the only thing I had to do. I’ve always thought of an upward slope of success after school, but now I know better, the challenges have helped me identify my true passion. Dreams change over time. Am figuring out what I want to do and how to realize my goals to adequately invest in my future.
We always feel we’ve got our lives all figured out until we actually become adults. As stressful as it is, it has been a good ride. Looking forward to the next stage of life.
