Twitter Opens Account Verification Program For Everyone; Here’s How You Can Apply

Twitter is restarting its Account verification program, allowing anyone and everyone to don a coveted blue checkmark. First, however, one needs to satisfy Twitter’s new verification guidelines, which means the account should fall under one of six different categories. In addition, the account has to be “authentic, notable, and active.”

The six categories that can qualify for verification are:

  • Government
  • Companies, brands and organizations
  • News organizations and journalists
  • Entertainment
  • Sports and gaming
  • Activists, organizers, and other influential individuals

Apart from satisfying the above requirements, your account should also meet the eligibility criteria for the respective category.

According to Twitter’s blog post, users will start to see the new verification application directly in the Account Settings tab in the coming weeks. So, keep checking for the option and here’s how you can proceed if it pops up for you.

As we told you earlier, first, you need to select the category you belong to; for example, you have to select the Journalists or News Organisation category if you’re a journalist. Then, you need to submit a government id proof or official email address or an official website to prove your identity.

After completion, you can expect an emailed response from Twitter to your registered within a few days of application. Though, this could even take weeks in case of the overwhelming response, which is quite probable. If verified, you’ll see the blue badge automatically on your profile. However, if not accepted, one can apply after 30 days of receiving a decision on their application.

Alongside these new guidelines, the user’s account must be complete, which means it should have a profile name and image, and it should be active, which translates that the user logged in within the past six months, and it should have email or phone number linked to it. Also, the account shouldn’t have a temporary suspension for policy breach in the last 12-months.

Twitter is also planning to expand the eligible categories include scientists, academics, and religious leaders, later this year. Furthermore, Twitter said that it plans to use new ways to denote automated and memorial accounts while giving users more ways to express themselves.
