Resident Evil Village is Skipping Current Gen Due To Technical Limitations

Capcom’s newest announcement definitely caught our eye at the PS5 Reveal Event, after several leaks. The main protagonist from the previous game, Ethan Winters, will be returning for another adventure in Resident Evil Village. But what’s even more interesting is that it won’t be coming to current gen consoles, rather launching directly on next-gen consoles in 2021, along with PC.

Well-known insider Dusk Golem explained the reason behind this big move. Apparently, Resident Evil Village was originally planned to be a cross-gen title. But it had a lot of pop-in/long texture loads on old-gen consoles, which was limiting their capabilities. Seemingly Capcom has dropped the PS4/Xbox One versions for the same reason, and Village will be coming out on the PS5 and the Series X sometime in 2021.

“Okay, I got some clarification on why they made RE8 next-gen only, when it was cross-gen previously. With the updated graphic fidelity overhaul they’re doing (still in progress), the way RE8 was designed lead to past-gen consoles having a lot of pop-in/long texture loads/ load times because the game has you travelling through most of the Village and had a lot of load zones. Because there’s a bigger focus on exploration this would lead to the last-gen console versions having notable issues, and it was holding back how pretty they could make certain scenes. So they decided to drop the last-gen versions of the game to make it so the game had no loading at all (not limited by last gen hardware) and push the graphic overhaul further without the limitations of last-gen tech in mind.”

As always, it’s not officially confirmed by Capcom yet, so take it just a rumor. Though it should be kept in mind that Dusk Golem had previously also leaked details about the game prior to the announcement, all of which actually came to be true.

big boi Chris

This is the first time in the series that a main game won’t be having a number in its title (not counting the spin-offs including the lackluster Resistance that launched this April). Although with a clever use of roman numerals they managed to hide in ‘VIII‘ in the title, Resident Evil VIllage.

The trailer is also said to be including some clips from an earlier build of the game. That makes sense considering how some characters look different at multiple occurences in the 3 min trailer. Take a look again, and let us know how you feel about it in the comments.
