Avengers: Endgame marked an end to the current phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), changing many of our lives and our thoughts about Hollywood´s biggest franchise so far. But although this movie closed an awesome movie cycle (22 films in total), a special words uttered by Peter Parker in the SpiderMan: Far From Home trailer just opened an infinite number of possible storylines.

Two weeks after the Avengers: Endgame premiere, the new trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home showed released, revealing major surprises for Marvel fanatics.

This new Spider-Man movie is going to be so fantastic that even Marvel Studios directors are considering this film to be the real closure for this current phase due to its storyline, although many fans consider it to be the beginning of a new saga in the MCU.

Either way, let´s get to the point. During the last trailer for the film, we see Peter Parker meeting with Quentin Beck/Mysterio, Nick Fury, and Maria Hill to deal with the Elementals, four extra dimensional humanoids that are terrorizing Europe.

During this meeting, Beck tells Parker “we could use someone like you in our world”. Then, Fury says “the snap tore a hole in our dimension”, which leads to Peter asking “are you saying there´s a multiverse?”

BOOM! Multiverse! This is the first time in the whole MCU that something as incredible as the Multiverse is introduced. This was the main plot in Sony´s Spider-Man movie: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, in which Miles Morales, Earth-1610’s Spider-Man, receives the help of other Spidey's from alternate Universes to fight Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin.

But apart from Sony´s plans for the Spider-Verse, the real news here is that Marvel Studios will probably base its future films on the Multiverse and the repercussions of the time travel which took place during Avengers: Endgame.

However, in order to understand all these comic book facts, we should explain what the Multiverse is and what it could mean for the future of the MCU.

If you are an avid Marvel Comics reader, then you will be familiar with the term "Multiverse" within the fictional Marvel Universe, also known as Earth-616, in which most Marvel storylines take place. However, since 1977 and the first installment of the comic book series What If?, the knowledge of multiple parallel worlds became wider and wider.

Known as the collection of alternate universes that share a universal hierarchy, the Multiverse rapidly became part of a every major Marvel storyline. With a large variety of these universes originating from another due to a major decision on the part of a character or event, these alternate worlds quickly changed the pages of Marvel comic books.

The appearance of many more realities led to the appearance of new versions of the classic characters that we were used to. Some examples of the alternate Universes or Earths include:

Earth 1610, also known as Ultimate Marvel, it gave origin to Miles Morales as Spider-Man, a version of the Avengers known as the Ultimate's, and many more.

Earth-2149, in which various heroes fell to a zombie plague, leading to the Marvel Zombies storyline.

Earth-58163, created by the Scarlet Witch during the events of House of M, it was basically a mutant utopia.

Earth-65, house of Spider-Woman, better known as Spider-Gwen.

Earth-982, a Marvel Universe set in the year 2099, giving origin to storylines like Spider-Man 2099, X-Men 2099, Ghost Rider 2099, Punisher 2099, among others.

With this in mind, we still do not know if the MCU multiverse will end up being real. However, it sure opens the door to a new phase that could possibly lead to a “Secret Wars” film adaptation. Secret Wars is an epic comic book storyline that deals with Marvel Comics heroes and villains from multiple timelines.

About this, the Russo Brothers, directors of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, have already expressed some interest in adapting it. But the only thing we can do for now is wait, and speculate what the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will bring.
