MECHANISM OF ACTION
Liothyronine replaces endogenous thyroid hormone and exerts its physiologic effects by controlling DNA transcription and protein synthesis.
When it binds to the thyroid receptors attached to DNA, it behaves like the endogenous thyroid T3 hormone. Hence, it accelerates cellular oxidation, stimulating growth, maturation, and metabolism of the body tissues.
It aids in the myelination of nerves and develops synaptic processes in the nervous system. It also enhances carbohydrate and protein metabolism based on available animal studies.
The half-life of liothyronine is between 1 and 2 days.
