Big Bang Theory: Why We Will Never Know Penny’s Last Name

The writers of The Big Bang Theory did a great job throughout season 12, preparing the immature stories for each of the main characters. When the show premiered the end of the series, fans knew everything they knew about Sheldon Cooper, Howard Wolowitz,  Bernadette Rostenkowski, Leonard Hofstadter, Raj Koothrappali, Amy Farrah Fowler, and Penny Wait a minute.

There’s something wrong there. Despite finishing third in the list of actors, Kelly Kuoko’s character is known only by her maiden name. So was it intentional, or was it by accident?

Penny’s mysterious last name was like an accident

Everything was done very deliberately in the Big Bang Theory. Finally, everything begins to make sense, and one would assume that a nickname would be useful, but apparently it was not. Penny’s last name was never written alone in the script, and it seemed to work well.

The lack of a nickname may have something to do with the subsequent rewriting of Penny’s character. According to Newsweek, Penny’s character was added to the show after viewers discovered that the protagonist of the woman next door was too hard. Initially, the team behind The Big Bang Theory cut Amanda Walsh to play the role of a department store clerk, who is intelligent and highly sexual. The apparently hated test audience sent the executive team back to the drawing board.

Penny was the answer but she also adopted the flirtatious joy necessary to balance Sheldon and Leonard, as well as the rest of the cast. It is possible that the rapid rewriting has made writers forget to give Penny a last name. Chuck Lorre once suggested Penny’s last name, Barrington, but fans didn’t see that it was written in a script.

Superstition helped convey the mystery.

Apparently, superstitious manufacturers helped carry the mystery forward. According to Screenrant, Penny’s lack of a surname was a simple oversight, but when someone noticed, it was too late to give him one. Steve Molaro revealed that the suddenly superstitious writer about writing a surname for Penny as if giving him the full name would somehow change the momentum of the program, but without realizing it had a unique name.

Fans may believe that her last name is now Hofstadter

Penny and Leonard, after much coming and going, finally get married. Their relationship was an important story throughout the series, and their marriage was equally important. Although fans may never know what Penny’s last name should have been, everyone can assume that she is now a Hofstadter.
