A Virginia Physician Is Behind Bars After Being Accused Of Performing Unnecessary And Life-altering Surgeries, Including Hysterectomies

A Virginia physician has been arrested for allegedly performing unnecessary and life-altering surgeries Including Hysterectomies and sterilizing women without their approval.

According to sources, Dr. Javaid Perwaiz, 69-year-old, performed operations and surgeries on more than 500 of his low-income Medicaid patients between 2014 and 2018.

In one instance, a patient had been troubled about an irregular pap smear, which Dr Perwaiz had stated could symbolize precancerous cells. Though he suggested a hysterectomy, the patient selected to have less invasive operation instead. Dr Perwaiz did the hysterectomy surgery anyway. In the process, he perforated her bladder and left her with sepsis that forced her to stay six extra days in the hospital.

The patient’s medical reports stated nothing about precancerous cells being detected in her uterus.

In another case, Dr. Perwaiz burnt a woman’s fallopian tubes down to almost nothing without acknowledging her at all. After spending years attempting to conceive a child a fertility specialist discovered that Dr. Perwaiz’s surgery had left the patient permanently unable to bear children naturally.

This is not the first time that Dr. Perwaiz’s work has been called into a problem. According to a source, he was flagged for performing useless surgeries as early as 1982, according to court records. He has been the subject of eight negligence lawsuits and, in 1996, his medical license was temporarily dismissed after he was convicted of tax fraud.

Federal prosecutors charged him with health care fraud and making false announcements relating to health care concerns.

The case got to the FBI’s attention when a staff of one of the hospitals where Dr. Perwaiz practiced, Bon Secours Maryview Medical Centre and Chesapeake Regional Medical Centre told the officials. According to an affidavit, Dr. Perwaiz would say his patients were coming in for their “annual clean out”, and that many of the patients did not even know what they were going into operation for.

Dr. Perwaiz has been kept in jail without a bond.
