Valentine's Day is right around the corner! Do you and your kids and family celebrate with fun activities?

Normally at this time of year, I'm planning a class party for my kids at school, but this year that isn't the case. I have two in school 2 days a week and home for 3, and 1 boy in school every day. However, no volunteers/parents are allowed in the school at all

Normally, as a classroom mom, part of my job is to plan, organize, and run the Valentine's Day class party. In other words, it's my job to keep 20-25 kids focused and on task for an hour or so – not intimidating at all!

This year, the numbers are a little more in my favor – I only have to occupy 3 kids, but they're a tough group to win over, lol!

Planning a Valentine's Party

I usually start thinking about the class party in January so that I can start planning with the other room moms.

As a group, we start with a blank slate and each of us throws out ideas. Then we begin eliminating or adding ideas, depending on how much time we have for the party.

The Magic Formula for a Successful Valentine's Day Party

I believe there is a magic formula to planning classroom parties. It's about finding that perfect balance between active games and more calm activities, such as crafts. And don't forget about the yummy food!

Here is my basic formula that I have adopted after planning several of these parties:

Start with 4 groups/stations (if need more due to large numbers of kids, see ideas below):

• a “food group”…snacks and/or any food project like cookie decorating
• “craft group”…artwork, put together a craft to take home, etc
• an “active game group”…some version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, bowling, ring toss, etc
• “semi-active game group”…Minute-to-Win-it games, puzzles, Don't Eat Pete, etc.

Valentine's Bingo and More Fun Valentine's Day Activities

Here are some of my favorite activities that I like to do for any Valentine's Day party – whether it's a school class party or a holiday party at home.

Valentine's Bingo Printable Game

This year we decided to play Valentine's Day Bingo!

However, I didn't already have a set, and I didn't want to spend money to buy one. So I set about making one of my own! Check it out – you can even download it yourself by clicking on the image.

I believe there's a trick to finding that great balance between active games and more stationary games or crafts in classroom parties.

Bingo is a great stationary game, and kids LOVE it! So even though it's stationary, the kids are moving, having fun, and laughing, which is music to my ears.

I recommend printing on card stock paper (if you have it) and laminating so that you can use this game again and again for many years!

Bean Bag Toss Tic Tac Toe

Now that we have a stationary game for kids, here's an active game that's equally fun!

It's the ultimate combination of Tic Tac Toe and Bean Bag Toss – check out the image of the “game board” down below.

The best part is that you can DIY this activity in just a few minutes. It's perfect – short setup, maximum fun!

Time Needed:

10 minutes to paint Xs and Os on the cornhole bags.

5 minutes to set up the game

Supplies Needed:

• Mini Cornhole bags. You want the 4″ x 4″ rather than standard cornhole size bean bags. I bought these, and loved them – they were sturdy and amazing! *See note below about how many to buy
• 2 bottles of puff paint (1 bottle red, 1 bottle white).
• Masking Tape – red is a fun color for this holiday!

All you have to do is take bean bags (or corn hole bags) and paint Xs and Ox on top of them with puff paint or any kind of fabric paint.

Be sure to use the opposite color paint on the bags (ex: red paint on the white cornhole bags) to make it stand out!

Take a roll of masking or painter's tape and create a tic tac toe board on the floor.

I recommend also using the tape to make a “toss line”… you know, the line that you have to stand behind when you toss. Otherwise, the kids run all over the board!

I got this idea from a friend 2 years ago, and it has been a major hit with Kindergarteners through 4th or 5th graders.

My own kids (1st grade, 2nd grade and 4th grade) have been playing it constantly since I made the board on the floor!

Customize The Game

The beauty of Tic Tac Toe Bean Bag Toss game is that it's completely customizable:

• choose the bean bag colors you want (I chose red and white for Valentine's Day)
• pick the paint colors you want
• make the board any size you want

I typically stick with the standard 3×3 board, but if you want to try this with older kids and make it a little more challenging, try a 4×4 or 5×5 board (if you have the space).

TIP: Just make sure you have enough bean bags to play!

*Pro Tip: For a 3×3 board, you would want 5 bean bags of each color. A 4×4 board would require 9 bean bags of each color. For a 5×5 board, you would need a whopping 13 bean bags of each color!*

Conversation Heart Games

These 2 Minute-to-win-it-style games are instant hits!

For one game, simply stack as many hearts as you can in one minute. Trust me, it's harder than it sounds!

If the stack falls over, you have to start from the beginning. The person with highest stack at the end of a minute wins!

Valentine's Day Heat Candy Game with Chopsticks

The second conversation heart game is to use chopsticks to move as many as you can from one bowl to another.

The person with the most conversation hearts in the new bowl at the end of a minute wins!

Valentine's Craft Activity

Valentine's Food Activity

When you think of activities, you may think of games and crafts, but trust me, eating is definitely an activity.

So you have your food group. I recommend dedicating one specific area to this purpose and you might consider including:

• a Valentine's Dessert Charcuterie Board
• Homemade Valentine's Day Pop Tarts
• Homemade Valentine's Cake Pops
• Hot Cocoa Bombs (if an adult is available to help)
• Fruit tray
• Meat and cheese tray
• Homemade sugar cookies the kids can decorate
