Capcom Announces Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Coming February

Capcom has announced the next title update for Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, which comes with most of the content released so far.

Champion Edition is going to be a unifying content pack of sorts in the same vein as Ultra Street Fighter IV. It will include all 38 characters released so far as well as 2 more, all 34 stages, and over 200 costumes. The costumes will include all DLC packs released so far, with the exceptions of Fighting Chance collectables, branded collaboration costumes, and the CPT DLC. That unfortunately sounds like the amazing Capcom crossover costumes may not make the cut, but we’ll have to see.

This package will release alongside major gameplay changes, one of which is the addition of a second V-Skill for every character. These gameplay changes will apply to every version of the game, much like the Arcade Edition update from last year, so you don’t need to buy Champion Edition to stay current with the competition. The teased online tournament mode teased by Yoshinori Ono in an interview with Eurogamer a couple weeks ago will likely be included with this major update, and we expect to hear more about them over the next couple of months.

And of course, Gill, the final boss of Street Fighter III, has finally become a proper playable character. He is a giant red-and-blue man who leads a secret organization, and is essentially immortal. His primary powers include control over fire and ice, which he can augment with fire and ice-oriented V-Triggers. His first V-Skill is a projectile, and the second is a parry from his home game. He is the 39th SFV character, and the next one will likely be revealed at the Capcom Cup finals next month. It feels like there’s ample room for another game reveal as well, but that’s just hopeful speculation on my part.

Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition will be released on February 14th, 2020, and pre-orders will open shortly. Gill is apparently set to release next month, but no specifics were revealed. Champion Edition will retail for $29.99 USD, but existing users can upgrade for $24.99 USD. People who pre-order CE in North America (other territories vary) will receive a new color for each character, which will be redeemable at launch. The low asking price seems to indicate that Street Fighter V is finally winding down, so let’s hope that the gameplay changes find the fanbase well.
