Superheroes help make 2018 Box Office the Biggest in History

2018 was a year for the ages, at least for those in the Film industry, as global Box Office revenues hit an all-time high with $41.7 billion grossed.

A significant reason for this record-setting year was the North American box office’s 7 per Cent growth from 2017, with foreign box office’s enjoying a modest 1 per cent growth. Overall, it is estimated that movie attendance grew by 4 to 5 per cent, although that number won’t be finalized until later this year.

Superheroes helped drive the record year and made up four out of the top five most lucrative films. Avengers Infinity War ($2.048 billion) was the top-grossing film followed by Black Panther ($1.346 billion), Jurrasic World: Fallen Kingdom ($1.304 billion), Incredibles 2 ($1.242 billion), and Venom ($855.2 million).

Unsurprisingly, it was Disney that led the charge in terms of studios as the conglomerate made up more than 26 per cent of the domestic market and 17 per cent of the worldwide share. Revenue-wise, Disney releases passed $7.3 billion worldwide, good enough for second all-time behind their 2016 end of year revenue.

It’s possible that 2019 will be able to eclipse these record numbers as there is an astounding amount of blockbuster films set to release this year. These films include Avengers: Endgame, Lion King, Alladin, Toy Story 4, Lego Movie 2, Frozen 2, Captain Marvel, Shazam, Hellboy, Joker, Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedghog, Star Wars Episode IX and many more.
