What is WebGL?

WebGL (Web Graphics Library) is a set of standards that make it easy to display 3D graphics and related content in the browser without the need to install plug-ins or extensions.

As a rule, the browser requires hardware acceleration for WebGL to function normally, ie rendering and displaying content supported by the GPU – the video card of your computer.

Khronos group from Beaverton, Oregon, USA designs and updates WebGL. It is a non-profit group.

WebGL functions like a thin layer around OpenGL which is used for 2D graphic design. It pushes graphics data to the GPU and executes required WebGL JavaScript codes on the GPU.

Now WebGL has become easy and best way to display 2D or 3D graphics.

This technology had also been applied to scientific research works. A book named “Cellular Automata” used WebGL to simulate Debris flow.
