Not Padman, But This India-Set Movie Around Menstruation Is In 91st Oscars Shortlists

Rima Das’ Village Rockstars made a graceful exit from Oscars race when it could not make it to Best Foreign Film Category list. However, all is not lost for India as an Indian short movie, Period. End Of Sentence, has emerged as one of the shortlisted movies in the Documentary Short Subject category for the 91st Oscars Shortlists.

The movie is directed by award-winning Iranian-American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi and has been produced by Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment, which has earlier backed films like The Lunchbox and Masaan. The film came as a part of The Pad Project, started by students at the Oakwood School in Los Angeles and their teacher, Melissa Berton.

The 26-minute short documentary Period. End Of A Sentence is set in Hapur village outside Delhi, where life took a turn when a sanitary pad vending machine was installed in the village. In a society where taboos related to menstruation are deeply rooted to the extent of oblivion.

A society where women have not even heard of sanitary pads or tampons, women learning to manufacture and market their own pads is understandably a huge deal.

The short movie also touches the contribution of India’s real Padman Arunachalam Muruganathan, the social entrepreneur and the inventor of the low-cost and easy-to-operate machine that makes sanitary napkins using supplies that are readily available in India.  He is known for bringing his machines to such small towns and helping to train women to operate them.

Period. End of Sentence is among 10 films that have advanced in the Documentary Short Subject category for the 91st Oscars Shortlists. The move is no less than an exemplary feat as there were a total of 104 films had originally qualified in the category. Click here for the complete list.

Nominations for the 91st Oscars will be announced on January 22, 2019, over a month ahead of the Oscars ceremony, which is slated to be held on February 24, 2019. Keep your fingers crossed for the real Padman!
