A lady died of her injuries after being struck by a Uber self-driving car in Arizona, authorities said on Monday, and the trip hailing company stated it had suspended its self-governing lorry program across the United States and Canada.

The mishap in Tempe, Arizona, marked the first casualty from a self-driving automobile, which are still being evaluated around the globe, and might derail efforts to fast-track the introduction of the new technology in the United States.

At the time of the mishap, which occurred over night Sunday to Monday, the automobile was in self-governing mode with a lorry operator behind the wheel, Tempe cops stated.

“The lorry was traveling northbound … when a female walking outside of the crosswalk crossed the road from west to east when she was struck by the Uber lorry,” cops stated in a statement.

A spokesperson for Uber Technologies Inc stated the business was suspending its North American tests. In a tweet, Uber expressed its acknowledgements and stated the business was completely working together with authorities.
