Jay-Z has 99 problems, but being broke definitely isn’t one.

The rap superstar may be astonishingly rich now, but it wasn’t always that way. Jay-Z — born Shawn Corey Carter in Brooklyn, New York — grew up in the Marcy housing project with his mother. There, he told NPR in a 2010 interview, his only job was to survive.

“It was a very intense and stressful situation,” he told Fresh Air’s Terry Gross. “There was playing in the Johnny-pump [an opened fire hydrant] and the ice-cream man coming around and all of these games that we’d play, and suddenly it would turn just violent and there would be shootings at 12 in the afternoon on any given day. It was a weird mix of emotions. One day, your best friend could be killed. The day before, you could be celebrating him getting a brand-new bike.”

Jay-Z went on to become one of the richest entertainment icons alive (and marry Beyoncé, of course). Here’s what we know about Jay-Z’s net worth.

At 19, Jay-Z made his first appearance on MTV.

In 1989, Carter joined rapper Jaz-O to record a song called “The Originators,” according to Biography. That song helped the pair land an appearance on an episode of Yo! MTV Raps. It was at this time that the moniker “Jay-Z” stuck.

However, it would be another seven years before he really made it. In 1996, his friends Damon Dash and Kareem Burke founded their own record label, Roc-a-Fella Records. That year, Jay-Z released his debut album Reasonable Doubt, and it became an instant classic. He continued to release hit after hit record throughout the late ‘90s into the early 2000s, which earned him his first few millions, Business Insider reported.

But music isn’t Jay-Z’s only money maker.

In 1997, Jay-Z co-founded the clothing label Rocawear. In 2007, he turned around and sold that company for a cool $204 million.

In 2003, Jay-Z also purchased a small percentage of the New Jersey Nets, which he helped revitalize even helped move the team to Brooklyn. In 2013, he sold his portion of the team for $500,000.

And 2015, he purchased the company behind the music streaming service Tidal for $56 million. Now that company is worth $600 million, Business Insider reported. Let’s also not forget his stake in a champagne company; his entertainment label, Roc Nation, which is owned by Live Nation; the sports-management division it launched in 2013 called Roc Nation Sports; his investment in Jetsmarter; and his upscale sports bar in Manhattan known as the 40/40 Club.

Jay-Z’s net worth now sits at an estimated $900 million.

Thanks to all those albums and side deals, Jay-Z is now one of the wealthiest entertainers alive. According to Forbes, his net worth currently sits at $900 million, earning him the top spot on the outlet’s 2018 ranking of the world’s richest rappers.

Oh, by the way, that doesn’t even count his wife, Beyoncé, and her insane net worth, too. According to Forbes, together the pair is worth an estimated $1.255 billion.
