Folk remedy or just simply delicious? My lemon water experiment.

A Lemon Tree

This spring I purchased a Lemon tree for my balcony garden. The flowers emit a beautiful and intense fragrance. They can withstand heat, be trained on a wall and/or brought indoors in the winter. Of course, the best benefit is that it produces delicious lemons. It even had a few fully formed large lemons hanging off of it. After the tree was transplated into a larger container and was settled in, it was only then that I plucked its fruit. They were fantastic! I was inspired to eat more lemons, besides I like homemade lemonade.

I have also heard of the benefits that come from drinking warm lemon water in the morning on an empty stomach. In fact, a little over 10 years ago I tried my first detox which included lemons in the recipe. It was a complete failure. That failure turned out to be a good thing since as years later when reading about that particular detox you’ll hear a lot of disclaimers and people advising against it. It was the “Master Cleanse.” So, even though I was running and working out regularly at the time, I always felt that my ‘poof’ (a little extra fat in the belly) might disappear one day with a little extra effort. Even though it wasn’t the best choice, Beyonce did it and it was in the news – hey, it worked for her.

Two of the main ingredients of the drink from the ‘cleanse’ that are included in the recipe include freshly squeezed lemon juice and Maple Syrup or lemon and honey. There was some truth or goodness in the concept of the detox. Lemon water is ‘good’ for you.

Years later you can read and fine tons of articles that detail all the benefits that lemons provide to the human body. There are also many false claims as well. So I decided to do a little experiment.

The Experiment

This time there would be no fasting, but I would drink hot water mixed with the juice of 1/2 of a lemon and either a spoonful of honey or maple syrup daily for at least 10 days. I would not eat anything for at least 1/2 hour after drinking the lemon water, but that rule didn’t apply to drinking coffee. I did drink one glass of room temperature water following the lemon water and before drinking coffee.

I don’t normally eat sugar, normally syrup for me is for french toast & pancakes and honey periodically in tea. Both taste delicious in the mixture, a few days I did honey and other days maple syrup. I was wondering if it would be good for me to consume it daily? Unlike sugar, both maple syrup and honey are metabolised differently and they contain anti-oxidants and some minerals too. Prior to my experiment, I mostly ignored what articles were saying about the health benefits but I did remember that some claims included weight loss, clear skin and improved digestion and the elimination of toxins for an overall feeling of well being.

10 days Later

Ten days later I feel better. Although about 3 days into my experiment my gut was bloated for a few days, the feeling passed but it was unexpected. My desire for coffee in the morning still exists but I drank less than my normal 2 cups in the morning. My skin actually was worse for a few days as well. Digestion improved, don’t think that I lost any fat from body, however, feel like 10 days is not sufficient to make any real judgments and observations with the exception of one – my feeling of overall well being has increased. I enjoy drinking the liquid so much in the morning and have decided to make it a regular habit.

Joyce Andrews wrote an article about the amazing health benefits of lemons in many different forms, you can read it here.
