On the Wednesday the last event takes place, the Rosette Marathon. This time two dragsmen dressed as foxes lay separate trails, both seven miles in length, which branch off at 45 degrees to each other after one mile. The trails are marked for the Hares to follow. Fifty beagles are released together and are given a 15 minute start over the hares. Each dog is wearing a rosette, numbered 1 to 50, and the winner of the contest is the hare that returns to the start with the most rosettes within the allotted two hour time period. Because there are two trails the beagles will head in different directions and so the hares have to decide which trail to follow. Judges on horseback ensure that hares don’t steal rosettes from each other. They also keep a tally of which rosettes are still to be found as once a rosette is collected by a hare they must tell the judge the number they have just obtained.
