Exclusive Interview With Band Of The Moment, The Nectars

The Nectars are fast becoming a rising force in the Music industry right now. The New Jersey natives; Jessica Kenny (Vocals), Mike Montalbano (Drums/Vocals), John-Paul (Bass) and Michael Barron (Guitar) have been around for just over a year and have recently released their latest single 'I Want It' from their upcoming debut LP 'Sci-Fi Television'. I had the privilege to talk with the Band about the album, single and their upcoming UK tour.
How would you describe your sound to new listeners?
It’s dense and abrasive and loud and fun.
How did the band get together?
Jon and Michael played together before in a couple of other bands. We wanted to try something new with a female-fronted singer, and we knew Jess from childhood. We had played in previous bands with each other beforehand and wanted to sing about something different. Mike came along later to complete the band.
How did the name The Nectars originate?
It is a Reference to Nectar collectors. If you don’t know what that is just google it.
Could you tell me a bit about your new single 'I Want It'?
Our song is from a woman’s perspective. It is about being very demanding. It is not often you get a woman who talks about sex and, as a band, we like to toy around with dynamics and wanted to write something that challenged chauvinistic ideals. It’s about getting what you want through strong physical desires. Making it short and simple!
You have a new album 'Sci-Fi Television' coming out soon, what can the fans expect from it?
Basically, we are excited and it is f*cking cool. We have never been in love with the music before like we are right now because we have found a bit of time to find the sound to record. We found a cool producer and recorded at Barbershop studios, a perfect mix of who we are. No track sounds the same! We are excited to share that with everyone that we are coming out swinging. There are some bands that send out that one EP to test waters, but we are different.
What message do you hope to make with your music?
We want to send the message of fun and empowerment. A chance to chill with your friends, do whatever you want, have fun, smoke weed, do yoga - haha.
What is inspiring you to write at the moment?
So many things inspire us. For example, we lost someone close to us recently, so wrote a song about that. Another time was we got drunk in the city and couldn’t get on a train. So we had to spend $300 on an Uber back home.
Who were your influences growing up?
A lot of different stuff really. Bands from our time like Nirvana, The rock things, classic rock stuff like Zeppelin, The Strokes, Weezer, Sonic Youth. A bunch of nineties stuff too.
The band are set to embark on a UK tour in May, what can we expect from your shows?
Well, people say our songs sound better live than our recordings. We love playing live, so are looking forward to that. Oh! And lots of crowd surfing too, ha!
What are you looking forward most to about the UK?
Oh! The accent and Nando’s and castles. We look forward to spending the night in a magical castle haha. We need to find one. Definitely!
What are your top 3 favourite tracks you are listening to?
Shame - 'One Rizla'
King Krule - 'Czech One'
The Voidz - 'All Words are Made Up'
Guilty Pleasures?
Too many cookies. I could eat them all day. I’m going to find a big one in the UK - haha.
Finally, what is next for The Nectars?
Well, we have a show coming up at The Gunner next week, as well as at Mercury Lounge with The Body. Oh yeah! We also have music coming out. Check out our next single 'We are Run'. Also, be on the lookout for the music video coming up. Yeah! I am just waiting for the snow to leave New Jersey and spring to come!
The debut album from The Nectars 'Sci-Fi Television' is out on May 25th.
