NJ plastic surgeon provides anti-aging treatments, including Ultherapy

Everybody ages, of course. How each individual ages, however, depends upon several factors, including family genetics, lifestyle habits such as sun exposure, tobacco use, or poor nutrition, and the predictable, normal process.

How aging affects the skin

Starting about the age of 25, lines and wrinkles around the eyes and in the forehead appear, caused by a loss of elasticity. Skin becomes drier as oil gland production decreases. The face loses volume and density, causing a sunken appearance and sagging skin around the chin. Deeper lines on the sides of the mouth, called nasolabial folds, may form. The skin becomes thinner and more fragile, and the neck and décolletage may appear rougher in texture, duller, and creased.

These signs of aging are due to changes on the inside and outside of the layers of the skin, such as:

Epidermal changes:

  • Decreased skin cell rejuvenation and production of lipids cause textural coarseness and dryness
  • Thinning of the skin increases sensitivity to exposure to ultraviolet light

Dermal changes:

  • Production of collagen, the major support structure of the skin, decreases at a steady rate
  • Elastin production declines
  • Skin is increasingly susceptible to broken capillaries
  • Less efficient blood flow impairs the delivery of oxygen and nourishment to the skin's surface, causing dullness

Subdermal changes:

  • Lipid-storing cells, which help to maintain volume, fullness, smoothness, and healing, decrease

These changes to the layers of skin are affected by internal and external factors.

Internal factors:

  • Weakened blood supply
  • Family history/genetics
  • Ethnic factors, such as a fair complexion, which may show wrinkles earlier than other skin types

External factors:

  • Environment
  • Free radicals cause damage to the lipid and protein cells. Aging skin loses some of its ability to de-activate the free radicals.
  • Other factors:
    • Sun exposure
    • Pollution
    • Tobacco use
    • Poor nutrition
    • Inadequate daily care

Ultherapy is the only procedure cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to non-invasively tighten and lift the skin around the eyes, neck, and chin, and to reduce lines and wrinkles in the décolletage. Using safe, effective, and proven ultrasound technology, Ultherapy is the non-surgical alternative to a face lift, with no downtime required.
