STAMFORD, Conn. – September 27, 2017 – Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA presents “Gymnastics Gold Week,” beginning Monday, October 2, with 30 hours of women’s gymnastics action from eight different Olympic Games across three days, and continuing with 2017 World Gymnastics Championships October 5-8. “Gymnastics Gold Week” features the greatest assemblage of Olympic gymnastics programming ever seen on a single network in the United States.
- 1988 Seoul Olympics: The Soviet Union’s Yelena Shushunova and her Romanian rival Daniela Silivas went head-to-head in both the all-around and the team final as the Soviets continued their Olympic dominance;
- 1992 Barcelona Olympics:Shannon Miller won silver in the all-around competition, and four additional medals including a team bronze with Kim Zmeskal, Dominique Dawes, and Kerri Strug;
- 1996 Atlanta Olympics: Strug’s iconic performance on the vault with torn ankle ligaments helped the U.S. win women’s team gold for the first time in Olympic history. Named “The Magnificent Seven,” the team consisted of Strug, Amanda Borden, Amy Chow, Dawes, Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu, and Jaycie Phelps;
- 2000 Sydney Olympics: Returning Olympians Chow and Dawes attempted to defend the United States’ team title;
- 2004 Athens Olympics:Carly Patterson’s floor routine helped her win gold ahead of three-time world championSvetlana Khorkina of Russia to become the second U.S. woman to win gold in the all-around competition. Patterson and teammate Courtney Kupets led the U.S. to silver in the team competition.
- 2008 Beijing Olympics:Nastia Liukin became only the third American woman to take gold in the all-around, while teammate Shawn Johnson took silver. Liukin and Johnson led the U.S. to silver in the team competition.
- 2012 London Olympics:Gabby Douglas became the first African American woman to win gold in the individual all-around competition in London. Team USA took home gold in the team competition, which featured Aly Raisman andMcKayla Maroney;
- 2016 Rio Olympics:Simone Biles won four gold medals and one bronze medal at the Rio Games, joined by teammates Douglas, Raisman (who won the silver in the all-around), Laurie Hernandez, and Madison Kocian to win team gold.
