Review: NYX – Micro Brow Pencil (Brunette and Espresso)

Cara Delevingne, Lily Collins, Emilia Clarke and Brooke Shields are my top-ranking chicks for banging eyebrows. Even very long ago, we still have celebrities with iconic eyebrows, like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor or Audrey Hepburn. Acting is not always into the eyes, it could be the things above them.

We gotta take care of every inch of our face. It has come a long way to talk about making your eyes, lips, nose and cheekbones pop out. Plus, a beautiful pair of eyebrows contributes to brilliantly expressing emotion without a fuss. “I’m smart, I’m serious, I’m angry, I’m happy… Who cares? Don’t mess with me!” Emilia Clarke’s wiggling eyebrows are such a big, fat thumbs-up in her acts.

Bushy, arched brows might be not something that you are born with. But also, it’s not that you need to die hard for. Pencils and powders are life-savers of over-plucked brows, fill in sparse areas as well as add definition. I’m gonna review one of my brow goodies, NYX Micro Brow Pencil in two shades, Brunette and Espresso. This belongs to the NYX “big boy” limited release.

1. NYX Micro Brow Pencil – What Is It Made With?

The product tends to create fuller eyebrows by delivering finest, hair-like strokes in order to naturally bridge the gaps. The formula includes Polyethylene, a polymer derivative, as a stabilizing, bulking, adhesive and abrasive agent. It’s versatile to bond ingredients in the formula.

Moreover, there are numerous texture enhancers, emulsifiers and thickeners, like Dimethicone, C12-15 Alkyl Ethylhexanoate, C20-40 Alcohols, Hydrogenated Coco-Glycerides, Ozokerite and Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate. These ingredients are meant to provide a creamier, smoother texture. Plus, C12-15 Alkyl Ethylhexanoate can also work as a preservative against UV exposure.

Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) and Microcrystalline Waxes generally function as thickening and emulsifying agents. They are able to stiffen the product consistency but also keep its flexibility and creamy feelings for high spreadability. Additionally, Zinc Stearate, a zinc salt of stearic acid, is multitasking to prevent the product from caking and flaking off as well as hold up its pigment.

Formulated with some other emulsifiers, stabilizers and preservatives, such as Sorbitan Tristearate, Tocopheryl Acetate and Glyceryl Caprylate. Finally, the product’s pigment is made of Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides and Ferric Ammonium Ferrocyanide.

2. Mediocre Applications

Both browns that I received, Brunette and Espresso, are perfect for me. When doing swatches on bare skin, these closely resemble each other. Brunette seems somehow lighter with slightly reddish tones in it, whereas Espresso is imperceptibly deeper. These shades match pretty well my Asian roots. The pencils deliver thin, gorgeously pigmented textures without being too thick or intense. Very buildable to quickly fill in gaps and result in bold, defined-looking brows.

Its consistency is not smudging at all. I love that. Plus, fairly blendable, I often use the spoolie at another end to comb my brows up after applying. In addition to create feathery effects, that helps to diffuse the color and make it lean more naturally on skin. The color payoff is literally splendid and easy to work with. Sometimes, I end up getting too much, then gently buff out excessive product with a cotton swab. I’m really digging the spoolie, which has adequately stiff bristles and a fittable handling design.

Otherwise, I’m quite bothered by that, after using for over a couple of weeks, it starts being difficult to lay down steadily its pigment on every stroke. I get this problem, especially with Brunette. Also, the very small tip is supposed to leave finest strokes. But, in fact, I find it’s not very pointed and precise either to work best with a flick of the wrist to mimic the hair-like strokes. But, I think this is still decent to be a dupe for some high-end products.

The stick is rigid, fragile and breakable, so be alert while applying. Lighten your strength, ladies! Speaking of the product’s long-wearing power, it stays in place up to 5-6 hours. Not easily washed off by water.

3. Packaging – Not Meet My Expectation

Housed in a sleek, black plastic cased pencil, which is extremely lightweight, long and slender. It’s dual-ended with a Brow Pencil and spoolie brush. The brow pencil is retractable by twisting up and down. However, it’s easily broken and loosened. During the application, the pencil is being twisted down gradually. To be honest, The retractable part is quite annoying, you might not be able to reach the very last of it.

4. My Rating (7/10) – Not Sure to Repurchase

The product is worth to try actually, its color payoff is nice. But sorry, I could not stand for its poor packaging design. I prefer a wooden type for triangle tip, more accurate applications and creamier consistency. I’d give it 7 out of 10.

Hope that you can find the review informative and helpful enough. I’d love to hear you out, be open with me. Thank you so much!
