What is Nausea?

Nausea is an unpleasant sensation that is accompanied by the urge or feeling to vomit or throw up.

Nausea is a PMS Symptom and also an early pregnancy symptom. So it can be quite confusing for women to differentiate between having a pre-period nausea or a pregnancy nausea.

Is IT Normal to feel Nauseous before period?

Yes, it is normal to feel nauseous before your expected period is due.

Nausea is a PMS symptom just like headaches, mood swings, acne, bloating, breast pain, weight gain and so on.

There are about 150 PMS symptoms and it varies from woman to woman.

Some women are prone to having premenstrual syndrome (PMS) as they approach their period.  PMS can start as early as 1 or 2 weeks before your period is due.  It could happen every month or occasionally.

Most women with PMS nausea feel sick days before periods.

It is important to know that not all women get nausea and vomitting as a symptoms of PMS.

Causes of waves of Nausea Before Period

The main cause of PMS is unknown but here are the reasons why you could feel sick before your period:

1. Hormonal Changes

Throughout the menstrual cycle, your levels of hormones change depending on what stage of your cycle you are in.

The rise and fall of estrogen and progesterone hormone are one of the numerous causes of PMS.

Estrogen is the dorminant hormone in the first half of the menstrual cycle (follicular phase).

When estrogen reaches its peak, luteinising hormone is produced which triggers ovulation.

When the luteinising hormone is produced, the level of estrogen hormones starts to decline rapidly.

After ovulation, progesterone hormone is produced by the corpus luteum.

If no pregnancy occurs after ovulation, the progesterone reaches its peak at around a week after ovulation and starts to fall because it's no longer needed to thicken the lining of the uterus.

The low levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones during ovulation, before and during period are one of the numerous causes of nausea and vomiting.

Hormonal fluctuations for some women, can also cause the stomach to produce more intestinal juice which leads to mild nausea.

2. Pregnancy

Nausea is an early sign of pregnancy. Up to 75% of women feel nauseated during the first trimester. For some women, nausea can remain constant even in the second and third trimester.

Nausea and vomitting is known as morning sickness. Don't let the term morning sickness fool you. The sickness can happen anytime of the day and especially at night time.

The best way to confirm if you are pregnant or not is to take a pregnancy test after a missed period.
