Why I  Chose Medicine

I was always adamantly against pursuing Medicine. I was always hoping that I could go into engineering, or journalism, or geology. But I always told people "I don't want to be a Doctor." But at the end of the day, I did. I always did, and I didn't even know it. It's amazing to think that God is shaping you to become a person that you don't even know that you want to be yet. But there is always such a plan.

I chose to go into medicine because I began to focus on the world where I was able to help others. One small moment of making a difference in somebody's life as a high school student made me realize just how much I wanted to dedicate to making that impact in the lives of others in the future. I realized that by spending time with someone suffering from a serious illness as a 10th grader, I was able to impact their life, even though I had no medical knowledge or abilities. I began to imagine the world where I did have those abilities.

One day, my parents received a map from the Red Cross of the work that they were doing around the world. The image plastered on the front of the packet showed a doctor helping a children in rural Africa. I began to realize that I wanted to participate in something like that. I wanted to be part of an organization and a field where I could go around the world and truly make a change.

I wanted to become a doctor because of all the impact that I could have on people's lives. Doctors are able to truly change the lives of others with what they do. Doctors are able to impact an individual life in so many meaningful ways. But doctors are also able to impact a global scale as well, and make an impact on society in general.

So, the reason that I chose medicine is ultimately to impact others in any way that I possibly can. No matter how large or small the scale, I want to show the same love to others that Jesus showed all of humanity.
